Hi guy's I am only new to the sport and currently have an old 80's windsurfer brand board. I have been having a lot of fun on it but want to get something newer and more manoveable . I am only 65kg . So the question is what do people recommend ? I don't want to get the wrong thing and go backwoods . So far all the bigger freeride boards I have found are a bit pricie and theirs not that many arround. I don't want to spend a heap on a new board only to trash it in the learning process, so far I have found a fanatic pure bee 169L that has had a few repairs for $500 but is a long way from home to get it. I have also found a 2003 jp freeride 109 for next to nothing close to home. What do you think? What should I be looking for and what do people have??

Thanks

I think the 2003 vintage JP Freerides are pretty sweet - a bit longer and narrower than than current equivalents. I owned a 145l for a while as my light wind board and really enjoyed sailing it. Very forgiving and given your weight should suit as a light wind option for the foreseeable.

However, strongly suggest you rent or get some lessons on a bigger board to get the transition from the longboard to the shorter format sorted. More volume will help the transition, plus you wont trash your board so badly in what will likely be a number of spectacular impacts in the name of education.....

Sails worth thinking about at some stage as what you are using on the wally (guessing here) is going to be a bit limited as you get going on a shorter board

120L - 130L freeride. Just get anything that is not soft or full of water, cheaper the better as you will smash it.
4m, 5m and 6m wavesails, preferably X-ply, less than 5years old, on the right brand mast of 30-50% carbon, and a new alloy boom.

Then the only thing you will break will be nose of the board which you can slap some epoxy and glass on each time, and be back on the water next day.

there is adelaide crew coming down this way all the time.

If you are sailing your windsurfer well, getting on the plane, using the harness, doing gybes and tacks without falling in, then you may be ready or the smaller JP board. Back when windsurfing went to short boards they went straight from the Windsurfer to boards smaller than the JP. Perhaps you can ask to demo the JP.

Thanks for the input guys, it helps to get some feedback. I have an early 2000 5.8 ezzy wave sale at the moment and looking at a 5.0 on the weekend. What is more important in a board length or width? Thanks jimbob I will look into the starboard kombat, it's a lot shorter than my current board but 100mm wider.

By the way jimbob , that sail made a huge difference!! Had a nice sail with it tonight down the bay
