Gday, thought I would get more responses in this forum than the wave sailing forum.

I'm keen on getting into the waves, live in Brisbane but frequently go down to the Gold Coast. I weigh 65kg, have an 85L Naish Hybrid Wave. Have 4.5, 5.7 and 6.2 sized sails. Just wondering what spots I should be considering in certain wind strength and directions, perhaps marked on a map. As well as any tips, not a part of the surf culture so some help with terminology maybe needed.

I frequently sail at Shorncliffe which is quite rough with some big swells out in the bay but I've never been able to ride a wave back to shore which seems like a lot of fun

Cheers, Alec.

Head to Narrowneck on the Gold Coast, that's where all the windsurfers use to hang out many moons ago (80's) for waves. Not sure if any of them are left though. Last time I was there there was only one and the local windsurfing school and hire was long gone.

Hey mate, narrow neck is a pretty lonely place these days. Not many crew going there anymore and the shore break can get pretty nasty at times.
Come down to Currumbin alley. It is a very forgiving place to sail if you pick your days and the locals (e.g. me) are ok

Look at the wind observations for coolangatta and just make sure it is a true southeasterly direction before driving down. Southerly is no good (too gusty for beginners).

Importantly, Stay well downwind /away from the surfers and swimmers and everyone is happy.

Regarding gear, Most guys are on 90-105 Litre dedicated wave boards. Can be a little gusty on the inside at times and a little more float makes things easier. I use a 95 liter Quatro quad with a 5 meter sail regardless of whether it is 8knots or 25knots.
85 Litres could be ok if you only weigh 65kg.

Hope this helps and ask any more questions you have.

Careful mahi, if you say Narrow neck has no sailors anymore the old guys get grumpy that its true and give out red thumbs.lol
I understand they would like to see things back like it was in the old days , but no use living in the past and being grumpy things have changed people??
Enjoy life for what it is NOW and the grumpiness will turn to smiles
Glad to help as always.

Maybe the redthumbs was cos he asked where to go and you could not resist having a shot at windsurfing - again?
What's getting old is your crap - again and again. Go answer kiters questions instead of having a crack here

BTW where I sail it is just as full of windsurfers as ever. Hard to find a parking spot.

I like your sarcasm but like Darwin's theory of natural selection, wavesailing on the Gold Coast may have gone through a similar evolution whereby some of the weak (ex windsurfers) may have moved onto other ventures (e.g. kitesurfing, scrapbooking, knitting and practicing their soft handshakes)
Please explain???

Trolling 101: See, what u do is deliberately offer a post that will cause windsurfers to tell you to go away, then you accuse them of being "grumpy" and then you can claim we are gumpy old men blah blah. Fits with your "old man windsurfer jokes" even though u r the same age.

We've seen it all before from u and the trolls before u 10yrs ago, so just go back to the kite forum

Sorry dude didnt want to upset you again. Like I keep saying, dont take it so personnel.
But you gotta admit when you have endless digs bagging kiter calling the gay, d!ckheads bla bla bla, which we all taken in good fun, but if the joke goes the other way we are trolling?? Gotta laugh at that.
C'mon dude, if you cant take it, dont dish it, other wise its a bit hypercritical, isnt it???
Oh, and Im NOT the same age as you lol, Im older and wiser and ws one of those x-narrow neck poledancers/hire school crew. lol
Peace out, or chill dude, or chill hommes or what ever your age group says.

I think the key to learning in the waves is having a big enough board so that you get out over the waves (not through them).
Also, swimming after your gear will wear you out quickly & you'll get the s.... As you are pretty light, your 85 lt is suitable.
You may want to consider a 5.0-5.2 as shorter boom than 5.7 & a size you will probably use it the most in Qld.
.
Although plenty of SE in south-east QLD if it's southerly you might consider Mudjimba on the Sunshine Coast or flat rock at
Ballina if you are in northern NSW although not sure how you will go since you can't drive yet?
