My partner is muttering about wanting a GPS. He is dreaming about buying another yacht so he really wants it for coastal cruising - plotting ,position etc.
Would the GPS's windsurfers use do the job? I think most of the local guys have one that cost about $150 odd?
I'm hoping they will so he can get it and while he is waiting to get rich enough to get the boat I can use it..![]()

Yep, the GT31 can give you latitude, longitude etc. plus lots of other stuff with waypoints etc that might be useful to bushwalkers. As windsurfers, we only use a subset of its features.
Heres a link to the specs:

Never done it but I'd imaging a GT31 would work well for navigation in conjunction with a decent map and the ability to navigate. IE it can tell you where you are and point you in the direction where you want to go.
However there are bound to be better GPSes out there for navigating at sea.
Guys, i think you don't understand the question.![]()
The answer is YES, buy a GT31!
.....
It is great also for cruising, you can connect it to a laptop and with some software will plot your position like a more expensive unit with maps.
we do understand the question. the gt-31 as good as it may be is not the best option for boat nav by any means.
I'm sure if Mr. sboardcrazy can afford a yacht...he can afford a decent GPS
, and I'm not insinuating that he need buy an expensive one, just that a GT-31 is not the most practical GPS.
My Furuno is great for plotting, creating & going to waypoints and most importantly - identifies dangerous reefs & obstacles. Combined with a depth-sounder, I can set a depth alarm for travelling over shallows & reefs.
A GPS is a crucial part of your safety equipment if heading offshore cruising. Getting hold of a good one can also add a lot of enjoyment and open up interesting locations to you with the right map info.
