I saw JonesySail's post the other day of the run he tracked with his iphone app. Android doesn't have the same app as jonsey used and can't find anything similar (dont really know what im looking for anyways). So does anyone have an app they use for marine gps tracking cause i think it would be cool to give it a go

Hi,

a couple of years ago I was checking out GPS tracking apps for Android.

I found a decent one called Open GPS Tracker.

This thread has a post from me back then which compares the result of Open GPS Tracker and a GT-11. The results in each category were different however they were fairly close to each other.

I checked the Android Phone store and Open GPS Tracker is still available as a free download.

Tested both open GPS tracker and endomondo today on the ferry. Both worked, very happy with them! But i probably prefer endomondo over open GPS as you create an account and it automatically uploads ur trip to the net So you can just log onto the website on the pc and see ur trip and stats for the day

So rveryone, for future reference when wanting to use an android mobile as GPS.....if you want the data to be saved to ur mobile and load it to the pc later Open GPS Tracker is the go.
But if you want the data to be uploaded to the internet and log onto the website to view ur trip endomondo is for you

Thanks for the help !!!!

let us know how those GPS Apps go, there may be a better one out there for I phones?(will have a look at Speedview also)
I havent really looked that hard, I just figured $3.99 is pretty cheap way to have a play with GPS sailing, its pretty acurate against my car speedo/GPS.

Best part of all, is if get in the poo i can call /text/ for help and even be found through the phones GPS via I Cloud.
Or in my case, as my better half is 2 days over due with new Bub, i can get the call to get the hell home!
Bugger is if you get a work call when your sailing that spoils the moment!

Hoping the phone pouch stays water proof! Have taken it out kiting in the waves and copped a pounding so far so good, even some high speed windsurfing wipeouts.

Would feel more comfortable if I had a second layer of protection.....
Damnn that 2nd layer of protection always forget!....4 kids later....

The only way to really test accuracy is to compare them to a GPS tracker that is accepted as being accurate. I found slight differences in all categories when comparing Open GPS Tracker on my Android phone and a GT-11.

I'm not sure what the powers that be think of these devices. If they are reasonably accurate then perhaps the rules should be changed for the GPSTC?

Ahh yeh i totally agree! Im directing my comment at people like me... who just want a free way to to have a look at their run for the day and have a bit of fun with it. My comment was only saying that it worked, tracked my movement, told me some approx stats and was very easy to use.
More testing is needed if you want an accurate reading!
