I managed to damage some of my footstrap holes because I like to sail without footstraps now and then...
So now I am looking for a solution that will make it possible to remove and put back my footstraps more often without damaging the holes again...

I'd check with a board repairer about the thickness of the inserts normally uesed for footstraps.
I have a sneaky suspicion that the self tapping insert is wider than the footstrap insert

Check with your JP shop as you used to be able to get oversized screw's in case there was a case of muppetism

M5 is 8mm outside diam, M6 9 mm

Should be no problem I hope?
I would prefer a metal insert for durability when taking off the footstraps regularly...

I would lean toward using larger self tapping screws in the existing holes rather than putting those metal inserts in
Another option would be to fill the existing holes with epoxy and re drill
Fill holes from bottom using a syringe so there's no air bubble at base of the existing hole

The insert is only 13mm wide. The M5 is 10mm O/D and needs to be tight so with stuff-all material around it, it will split the insert. You will end up with a waterlogged board.

Don't reinvent the wheel, if screws are only a little loose put a bit of plastic wall plug noodle in it, or a bit of line trimmer line (nylon stuff like this fishing line, even a couple of matchsticks. Screw in same screw again, done.
If they are very very loose, like pull out by hand, then fill with epoxy and re-drill

or drill a new hole between two stripped holes

That's great advice.

I've used inserts similar in a wave board I built. In the days of having an offset back foot strap for down the line waveriding.
Unless you have skills to rought in either PVC block or nylon rod and glass over don't bother.

Helicoils would have a smaller diameter than those self tapping inserts I bet.
But you'd have to drill and tap the holes for them.
