Hi all , I bought a new quiver of ezzy waves just under 2 years ago ,I also have the ezzy masts to match.
I've followed the ezzy rigging guides and usually just set to medium d/h and o/h then adjusted either way to suit conditions if required.
I've found using the cord there is what feels like way to much positive o/h so never went fully with this.
I'm now rigging more closer to max d/h and min o/h and finding I like the feel of this but it goes against all the ezzy rigging videos.
just wondered how others are rigging ?
I am pretty much always rigged between the max and next to max lines for downhaul.
Outhaul to feel and that is my main tuning tool for changing conditions, but the strings are close enough to get you in the ballpark.

To use the outhaul guides correctly, the sail needs to be sitting flat. You are probably instinctively pulling the clew towards the boom end before using the guide which is incorrect. If you use the guides correctly, you'll find that you're barely applying any outhaul at all for minimum. Then basically one boom notch out for med and another for max.
As JD implied, try to avoid using less than medium setting on the downhaul. Minimum settings will give a bit of extra grunt if you are underpowered, however the sail will feel heavy and sluggish in the gusts. Somewhere between med and max for both settings is the sweet spot IMO. Needless to say, always release and re-adjust your outhaul if you have altered your downhaul.
Thanks for the reply's and good to know they work best with med to high downhaul , i only pull the chord and not the clew when setting the outhaul but it still would be way to much outhaul (i think) if set to the chord length.
ill pay more attention over the next few sessions.
I found with my Ezzy sails that just one downhaul setting works 99% of the time. Some of my friends use the full tuning options but I just downhaul until the leech is just twisting and then outhaul 2.5 fingers from boom end.

Hi Matt , do you use the ezzy masts and where does that land on there preset downhaul indicator? thanks
I've had the Lion, Cheetah, Tiger and Panther Ezzy sails and rig them all the same. Maximum downhaul and 1cm less than maximum outhaul for lighter winds and maximum outhaul for maxed out. My boards have all been faster boards, even the wavier FSW, so have never needed low end grunt and benefitted from the extra twist instead of tighter leech low end settings. All Ezzy masts.
If you arent used to Ezzy sails, they do require more outhaul than others as the downhaul tension is less.

I use the Ezzy XT masts, I use a hookups on my 5.7m elite. I have 400 and 370 masts for my Taka's. I find the 5.3m Taka I just use one downhaul setting which was the Ezzy mid setting, the 5.0m is newer and again just set to mid and play with outhaul.
I have Ezzy Lion's which are about 2018 i think. They get ALOT of use doing GPS stuff. Not sure if it is the sails changing or me as i learn and progress but i'm finding they need more downhaul than i used to think. As above, always atleast inbetween mid and top tuning mark.
Speed sailing i'm giving them max downhaul and mimimum outhaul, judging outhaul by how much it can touch boom rather than the tail guide ropes.
In the past i was not giving enough downhaul and again as above, felt heavy, sluggish, and would pull me forward too much.
Also the outhaul tail guides are not really right, usually i'm giving much less outhaul. This may be as i find that i want the sail to open for downwind bearaways.
On my 7.5 the tuning mark on the sail got lost, came off. I also adjusted headcap after some issues popping it out. So i had to set that one up by sight and feel.
I contacted Ezzy once and he said this
"1) Please measure your masts and confirm that they are 430.5 and 460.5 (including the tip plug).
- If your mast(s) are LONGER, then the DH gauge needs to go DOWN by the difference.
- If your masts are SHORTER, then the DH gauge needs to go UP by the difference.
My Hookipa 430 is 430.5 with plug. My 460 is 460 with plug.
I'm told they are not the fastest, but they feel soooo good!
Ezzy sails are a bit like cambered sails, that why they require a bit more outhaul. They can be quite powerful but manageable still even at min. Like you I think I was using medium dh and min to med ot never more.

-As the sail get used they stretch a little and will require a little more downhaul.

-there should be a sharpie mark on the sail next to where the tuning mark goes. This is put on the sails at the factory when they rig it with a load cell and is used by them to place the tuning mark.

+1 I just wanted to add that I always used the outhaul guides and the outhaul specs for most sails, in general, as where I set the boom, not necessarily where to set the outhaul which is usually in from there. That allows a bit of adjustment room on the water if the wind comes up. Obviously, sails where I use adjustable outhauls, I'm often way in from the boom when I need more power or bearing off. I see too many people who automatically just pull the sail tight without regard to conditions.
I run Takas and Waves with the full range of downhaul settings. If the wind is very variable, like it seemed to be throughout the season, I range between med and min1. While I'm sailing if the wind gets up I can usually adjust with outhaul alone. If the sail still feels like a draft back unstable sack of **** only then do I return to shore for more downhaul. If the wind looks decent and steady I go straight to med. I rarely use above mid because then I might as well go with a smaller size.
Cheers Jens
This is exactly as the sails are designed to be used , however I can't seem to get on with anything below med downhaul (usually set mid to high).
Or using anymore than mid outhaul (unless I'm crazy over powered)
Quite a few of the locals are on ezzys and all seem to put loads of Downhaul on what looks like to be at max. This is in more bump and jump conditions so that probably plays a part in how I like them to feel.
I'm definitely going to experiment more , love the sails but would like to get a better feel with the tuning.
