Looks like a typical SE cross-on and light on the inside. I sail these conditions now and I have no idea how these guys did it on such historic gear! Perhaps those non-batterned sails provided heaps of power that you need to punch out through the shorebreak.
This was the sort of stuff that inspired me in the 1980's. I love the billboard sails and Mark Paul's Bombora Proto!
cheers

Robby, Pete Cabrinha, Maui Meyer, MP etc. I was there to watch that contest, really great to see!!!! Longy was just the best place to windsurf back in the day!!! Gtreat find!!
GREAT post ![]()
good to see the ole chest harness in use, even saw one guy with his hook pointing UP 0:14 - what a champion
I recorded a windsurfing segment from WWOS shot in Sydney onto VHS tape back then. They used Van Halen's song 'Jump' as backing; so every time I hear that song get played I replay that video in my head. Probably got the tape somewhere but not sure if the player still works
Didn't ya hate it when the VHS player drive roller got sticky & it 'ate ya tape' ![]()
Started sailing again late last year and was using that same gear until I upgraded
Awesome.. That brings back some great memories.. Looking for myself there but no go.. ![]()
There's another similar vid that shows me close up filmed from above by a helicopter and I'm on a board with a big union jack sprayed on it.
I'd love to see that one again if someone comes across it..

I've still got that clip on VHS buried somewhere. I recorded it off Wide World of Sports and it is indeed set to Van Halen's "Jump". I always think of it when I hear the song played.
On the same tape, I've also got a similar one set to Midnight Oil's "The Power and the Passion". It was awesome. Some people on here may be in it. (anyone else remember that one?)
Really nostalgic stuff from when windsurfing burst on the scene.
Absolute great clip.
Wow, the guy at the beginning is using a stock 1-design Mistral boom, and his sail is like, one foot from the board.
Musta been taken over more than 1 day, since they're sailing of a NE and a southerly at different times.
Great skills those guys...
I enjoyed it too. See how much tail loading they had to do make those old boards turn...
Back in the day I was fully convinced by those footabll fins. Thought that they were the go against spin out, but used to hate being catapaulted on cray ropes with them though...
Bombora New Toy, thruster, twin mast track, rope universal mast base, no footpads.
Still got one. But no footy fin.
If you like that try and get your hands on a copy of trade winds by jack McCoy
It will take you way back
Great vidoe footage .they make it look easy on the early years gear..
p.s interesting to notice how high the foot leech of the sails are back then!
Tradewinds has been remastered and is an awesome watch!!!!!! fave movie of all time windsurfing.
Plus the old footage of WWOS's Jump at Longy with the final between Robby and Alan cadiz was great!!! Entered the next years Sony contest at my home break and learnt a hell of a lot after being humbled. Back in the day, great ****!!!
