Hi,

Just looking at campervan hire and am staggered by how much the excess is and how much extra / day you have to pay if you want to reduce the excess.

Just wondering whether there is a cheaper way of protecting yourself without paying through the nose. The extra insurance payments are 1/2 that what the camper van hire is!

Thanks

Have you looked at travel insurance? A lot of the policies cover you for that.

Thanks for that. I had no idea I could buy travel insurance that also covered the excess on the car hire. Found a policy that costs me ~??50 for the 3 weeks hire. Save a fortune buying it beforehand

Hi flanagaj

We have recently come back from a trip from Sydney to Cairns and we hired a campervan for three weeks. Just to let you know there is a price war going with campervans, tours, trips, etc, so you can pick up a bargain on as there are a lot less tourists now visiting Australia.

One way they tried to fool you is to say the campervan is only $29 per day, then by the time you add in insurance, and all the extra fees it can blow out the real amount you have to pay which is kind of sneaky.

Supermarkets do the same, so it's definitely worth shopping around to see if you can pitch one campervan company against another one to get a good price. This is exactly what we did as originally we looked at Jucy and Travellers Autobarn in Sydney, but in the end we went with a company called travelwheels campervan hire in Sydney.

The staff were friendly and they offered to price match our deal, so we ended up booking with travelwheels, here is a link to their website www.travelwheels.com.au/site/campervan-hire-australia/

If you are short of cash another option is to go for a campervan relocation deal.
These are brilliant and you can hire a campervan for as little as $1 per day! Basically you relocate a campervan from one city in Australia to Another one and you only pay a $1 per day! We have bagged three of these $1 per day campervan relocation deals whilst over here in OZ.
We found quite a few of these $1 deals on this website called www.onewaycampervans.com

Hope this helps

Den

Just be aware, that if you have an accident you will need to pay the hire company the full excess and then claim that money back from the travel insurance (less the insurance company excess). So you will need a credit card to cover those costs until you get your claim back, Anyway be sure to read the fine print!

do you have a gold or platinum credit card?

If you pay with them you are most likely insured for the excess and and travel insurance

+1
I don't know how good the travel insurance is on the credit card but I looked into it and used it on my last trip for the car rental excess and it was a good option. Even the car hire place said if you have the right card then don't worry about excess insurance.

If you insure yourself you will still need to pay the substantial bond. Don't forget to factor in the banks cut (both ways) if your using foreign currency and make sure you have enough for the full bond, with Britz last jan is was something like $7500 last. I have used hippy camper there bond/insurance offer was much less.
