I think Kato's visor is the problem. He has it tinted so dark that he doesn't realise how dark it is and just keeps going until he gets one gybe

Someone buy him a watch for his boom.

He also doesn't realise how close to the bank he is sailing and sometimes gets so close to a visiting sailor on the bank that they never forget it for years!
