Chucking this here in case it's useful for someone.

Given: parking hassles last holidays; some of my sailing spots are not accessible by car; I have an LT, which is 'light' but too heavy to carry long distances - have thrown this together. Cost approx $60-70, mainly for Bunnings trolley and the pvc (pressure rated). Had some other bits lying about.

I considered making something lighter just out of pvc, with lower clearance, but I wanted the clearance this one gives. Means I can centre the trolley more, making things lighter. The weight is not an issue (maybe 5-6kgs), and it should last. After a trial, the main issue with having the board higher (rather than between the wheels more) is that it has to be tied down more securely otherwise the trolley shifts on bumps.

Only thing to add is some sort of netting or maybe a cut down tub in the 'v' so I can carry stuff under the board.

That one won't ship to me. But yes after looking about didn't see any as cheap as I managed, and I had some bits and pieces. Nice to get the tools out as well. The bought ones would be lighter and more compact though, for sure.

I had found it on gumtree for $20 :)

The trailer arm comes off easily, you can strap your board on it with couple of tie downs, your mast, sail and boom on top of the board, the rest in the basket. When the centre of gravity is on the axle, you can hold on to the mast and push it with very little effort. Plus it's collapsible and wheels come off for easy storage.

Since I moved to shorter boards, I now carry all my gear on couple of j-hooks on the side of my bike.

This is how I use it:
1-put the put the board on and use a short tie-down to secure tightly to the carrier's frame
2-stick the mast in the carrier outside the board and secure with the carrier's bungee cords.
3-I use a sail bag with a long shoulder strap e.g. Point-7 to tread through the boom and hang over the bike seat.
4-hang the harness by its hook on the other side of the carrier's frame and secure the mast extension+base on it too using the downhaul rope.

It works really well and no problem with the balance. I can ride it with 30+ knot side winds.

Thinking of a longer one for 12 ft board and out of aluminium - can I bolt it together with stainless fasteners or get it welded ?

^ With a 12 ft board could you not strap some wheels on the back and build a hole in the nose for tow fixing?

I just use an old kids bike trailer. They come up for sale used (and cheap) all the time as kids grow out of them. Just need to strip the seats out and fashion a much longer attachment arm. Bonus is that they usually fold up petty compact so it's easy to get your trolley in the car. These days, I tow mine with my e-skateboard which is much easier to fit in the car than a bike.
