I've got a crack in the rail of my board. It's not too bad - about 1cm long. It's been recommended to use epoxy resin and some mat..
I have some epiglue..high strength epoxy glue..Can that be substituted?
Just that I already have it..If not I'll go and buy some resin.

If its just a crack and that small just get Solarez and follow the instructions. Easy as.

Hi Mate, assuming the crack is nowhere near foot straps, and if the crack is due to an impact, filling with slow curing epoxy resin may do the trick to keep the water out. Often rails cracks appear due to delaminations or stress in which case I would recommend to apply the resin over 2 layers of a fine woven fibre glass matt (4oz or 100g/sqm). Apply to an area generously larger that the crack itself, sand the rough edges, fill and paint.

I had a tube but when I found it the cap had come off and it had leaked out everywhere..

..I was thinking of using that.
I'll have to buy some more..

Thanks. Yes I think the mast hit it although I can't remember when..

Pics please Sue, there is all kinds of small crack

I have seen a small crack that was just the end of a massive crease not visible under the pads= about to explode.

Or people wanting repair and its clearly only in the paint = who cares.

I did notice a bit of moisture coming out when I first noticed it ( it was as I was undoing it from the rig and it was up on it's side.)

That doesn't look too bad, Just sand the damaged area back a bit. and use your epiglue with a couple of layers of fiberglass cloth, (not mat)

Phew.. we just did that..It's not very pretty at the moment but I suppose I can sand it and try to touch up paint it..we only used one layer of mat..Might have to get some cloth and add a bit more..How thick is cloth?

Depends on the weight, I work on 3 layers of 200gm and 4 layers of 150gm, being about 1mm thick. But that depends on if you compress it to get the best fiber to resin ratio, or wet lay up and bog.

Its a lot thinner than mat. but structurally a lot stronger, I recon matt will hold it all together until you hit it again then redo with cloth

Thats nothing to worry about, just go to the local pharmacy and get the same coloured nail polish and do a few coats...works a treat, but the local pharmacy chicks are wondering why i am buying so much nail polish

The problem with paint only, is that it can't stand up to the building pressure that happens inside of boards when they warm up.
And if there is any moisture inside the board, the pressure can build up quicker and stronger.
For small repairs (smaller than that one) Solarez is much stronger than paint.

Non structural and tiny.
I'd stick it in the sun for a couple days with crack lowermost - vent open as I doubt the crack is through to the core and we don't wanna pop it - and then a dob of Solarez to seal it.

Solarez is definitely on my shopping list and this time I'll store the tube in a jar so it won't get damaged..

I came across this looking for spray paint. it says it's for metal but would it work /be safe as a touch up paint?

But I reckon it would look worse with a black touchup splotch
The smallest area u will be able to spray will be about say 100mm diameter and people would wonder just how big or bad the repair under that patch was. Also paint over the top of non skid really sticks out
Thus I think it reduces resale value..... whereas with a dab of see thru Solarez and you can see its just a tiny crack

We've already sanded it back a bit and put some fibreglass mat on it - about a 50 cent area..got to it before you got back about the severity..

.So it's going to have a white 50 cent piece..or a touched up black one..

..black I think..I'll have to show them this thread..

Yep it's retired..the repair looks pretty ugly. It's a raised patch about 50 cent sized..Maybe we could have sanded it flatter but it will do for now..

Good idea. Customise it and make it a feature. I have one board where I replaced the finboxes, and it was never going to be a hidden repair, so I got all artistic.... I am not a good artist though!

Maybe I should once I decide to sell it..

..I have sanded the lump back a bit so it's not as high and it looks a bit better..
