Carbon fins bend just us much as G10 but if you hold the tip of a carbon fin and twist it,there is much less twist than a G10 fin.
How does this help? Not sure, just passing on what i have heard.
Carbon is clearly stiffer - fact. So unless you are talking about the fins that have just one layer of carbon in the middle for looks, no, G10 and carbon fins are not the same.
Carbon is way lighter for the same thickness, so no, carbon and G10 are not the same.
G10 is more durable (resistant to abrasion). If planning on hitting bottom it may be a better choice.
Now, if you want a fin that has a certain bend, you can acheive that
same bend with carbon and G10 (and even steel or aluminium or playdough if you wish) but the thicknesses will be wildly different. Once you get to a certain length, G10 and fibreglass are simply too bendy for a high performance fin. Thus people use carbon.
I am no racer but once you get to around 50cm the difference in carbon vs G10 is a lot.
The assertion that a carbon fin bends just the same but has more twist is ridiculous. Different foil shapes will do that, but carbon cannot be the same stiffness in direction X and bendier in direction Y
Stop listening to the friend who told you that stuff.
