Hi all,
Iam new to the sport and are looking for some gear to get me started, I have had a chat to Gareth at the strath store so have a small amount of understanding of what I need but open to suggestions. Iam 80kg 6ft if that helps. Also Iam located in Milang. Cheers
Best and first thing to do is get a couple of lessons booked in. Get a board that is around 130-140lt and a couple of sails that will suit low wind (5.8-7m2) and a high wind sail of around 4.5-5.8m2. This will get you started as well as being able to up haul easy enough.
If you are close to a good wind surfing area, go down and make yourself known with the local windsurfers, they are the best guys to help with any concerns and setup issues you will have. They can also give you some basic instructions.
It's not easy taking the first steps but you will be sooo glad you did in the end. I agree with deejay, don't do what I did and get too small a board to learn on. 130-140 would be a good size, I still ride a 140l board in light conditions even after 10 years on the water.
You can find some guys on here that may do up a really good beginner package for you from their old gear.
Put a post for good trainer gear in the Buy & Sell section. I started on 20-25yr old gear for $50 in September this year. Big heavy boards but a lot of fun to learn on. I have now moved up to slightly new / Old gear of around 10-15yrs old but still fast and fun ($100 with Boom and 2 sails).
Good Luck and talk to the guys sailing (at the end of the session preferably), they will be more than willing to share some secrets, and maybe some gear.
