I just started using my short board again (when I first purchased it there were only 'floaters' & 'sinkers'?) and I want to upgrade my rig. Currently it is a tie-on-boom, one piece mast and Tyronsea base. I guess the base is going to be the major hurdle because of the fiberglass board's age (mid 80s). Pics of what I got:
First question is would the newer rigs fit on my existing mast base? Guess the gear I'm looking for would be
- two piece mast
- clamp on/adjustable boom
- 2 sails? (I have a 5.9 North Sail and am 75kgs)
I just do flat water at the present but may venture outside again. Only took to the surf once way back then but my water starts wernt that good, so lost my confidence
.
Cheers
Add a new mast base and extension to your list they should fit onto that board. Looks in good condition.
that board is gold... don't sail it!!! Keep in it's current condition.
That being said, new bases should fit no worries. You will find that if you were to shelve that board and some of your old gear in preferance for something newer (doesn't need to be brand new, but anything in the last 5 years or so) you may find the sport a great deal easier than you remember it.
I would hate for you to head out on the old stuff, have a crap experience, and give away the sport again.
^^^^ as above.
For a boom, I would recommend a Severne Blue Line or a Prolimit aluminium boom. They both come out of the same factory (along with the Chinook booms as well I believe) and I reckon they're excellent value at under $300 brand new.
If you chose your sails and extension carefully you may get away with having just one mast.
Good luck!
Check that the plastic mast base slot is in sound condition. Plastic can get brittle with age.
If it's OK, consider getting a Chinook mast base. They attach with two bolts, vs. the single bolt your Tyronsea system uses. The two-bolt system spreads the load more evenly, at the price of reducing the range of fore and aft adjustment.
I would strongly recomment getting a different mast base. The mast base you have make very difficult to get enough downhaul on a sail. Normally you can only get enough downhaul to stop the sail from rising up the mast as you sail along.
My whole kit is for sale at $1100. That includes 3 sails (5, 5.8 and 6.5) 2 masts, 2 booms, mast base, harness and bag for everything to fit into it.
