In am trying to find out what happened to Shane O'Cullahan ?What was his original custom boards called? In owned a few he wad with Tyronsea I think too.Also trying to locate Ben Prydm? He made Jump City boards both legends and great riders and shapers :) Any info appreciated

Shane is still in Adelaide works at a boat place at brighton can't remember the name.
he is usually a robe every easter for the comp.
windforce then windenergy where the boards still have a few and still sail the wood bottom waveboard a bit he made for me in 95.,
pretty sure he done the shapes for the molds for tyronsea and also there custom glass line.
don't know about Ben but a mate still has a nice jumpcity speed gun sitting in his shed.

I think it was Wind energy -still got one in my shed - shane sails still - randomly spoke to ben pridham - a year or so ago at a show somewhere - new of him from seacliff pub days in 80s - we use to drink there (so did the "windwankers" as we called them then) think he is said he was involved in the wine industry in southern vales

Good memories from those days with these two. Both very good at what they did. Ben shaped my 1st custom in 84 wasn't too concerned in the shape in those days more concerned in the graphics. How things have changed. That board was a work of art worthy of hanging on the wall.

I seem to recall Shane O'Callaghan as having the Bombora licence in SA and that he made custom protos designed by Mark Paul. I may have mistaken him for someone else that but it would only have been for the first half of the decade of the 1980s when Bombora protos seem to fall out of favour...presumably his board brand changed at some point but my memory is not particularly good.... Perhaps those in SA on seabreeze will recall... Cheers...

My memory is even worse....
I bought a Bombora in1980 whilst living in Adelaide from Phil Bache I think but I don't remember it being a 'custom" job. I thought that they were a standard windsurfer 1 with some cut off the bum and a heap of rocker cranked into the nose. This scientifically researched technique involved putting black plastic on the underside of the board where you wanted the rocker and putting it, bottom up, in the sun across 2 chairs. The nose was then weighted with bricks. Important not to forget about it, so a liquid lunch was not advisable.
And some people don't believe in the Moon landings. We had the technology!

WazzaYotty, Bombora were one of the leaders in custom boards in the early 1980s.. what you are referring to was a much earlier generation... perhaps it was not Shane in SA anyway..I had one glass bombora proto shaped by Aidan Nicolson in 1984 in Perth of Murray Smith surfboards which was a Mark Paul design (made under licence) with asymmetrical finbox (you could place the fin on either side offset..) with a thruster set up...it was a little extreme was short 7'10" and was good in Perth conditions but did not handle big waves down at Margarets...spin out was a problem... when I got a single fin pintail from Warren Thomson it was much better down the line... and all around...

I had a tonne of both when i was learning.

I still have a single fin "jump city" in the rafters at mum and dads place.
(even has side bites. Thruster style 30years ahead of its time).Shane still sailes here and there.

Cool he was the calafornian dude? He made me the best custom slalom and wave gun ever :) fantastic paint job I designed the lot and he just made it :)And it worked

I bought Mal Wrights Canary islands speed record board rode it twice was hard to gybe 8ft and 11 inches wide 25 knots starting ability and 4.4 np speed sail crazy

Had a go on a bombora prototype it had a radical nose concave it was same shape as a new toy haha except rounded pin tail

Yeah, Shane O'Cal used to do the Bombora Protos is SA. They had that SOC logo on them - looked like 3 eight balls with each letter in them.

Had lots of sick WindForce boards, and before that Jump City's from Ben Pridham. My first wave board was a 7'10 Jump City with tiger stripe rails, plenty of channels, and two main finboxes so you could offset the fin depending on which tack you were sailing. That board was originally built for Lance Pridham.

Very creative times. Besides those two custom board brands, there was also Gravelle innovating on the west coast of SA and a few other guys building boards around Adelaide, Peter Ross started up not too long after that with his Ocean Eyre boards (OES).
And plenty of windsurf sails being made around SA in those days; Dean Ryles was probably one of the first SA sailmakers, and then Dave Alexander, Brett Yardley, etc.

Remember the first Balin hot pink wing cut full batten wave sails brand new 350 $And I had the first NP powerhead sails :)

Shane O'Callaghan made the Cutloose wood longboards in around 1997.. I remember Chris Bystrom publication Pacific Longboarder circa Dec 1997.. with Kanoa Dahlin on the cover at backdoor pipeline and the board guide in that issue included that board..along with a number of other Mctavishs Josh Constable models etc... threw out the mag a few years back...he is certainly a craftsman and an innovator.. anyone have a Cutloose surfboard !

Yeah, Shane is still working at Bink's Marine. If Dean Ryles makes sails as well as he can sail they would be insane. Where they called Snapper Pt sails??

I apologize now for the out there paint job and doodles I destroyed this board abit but ot was a fast fun board rode all over WA this board and I had a jump city board too plus hi tech can opener. Assemtrical.

They were the days.Hanging around in the shop frothing over the mk1 RAF wave sails hanging from the ceiling waiting for the next gust to get on the water. Some major time was waisted there.

Owned a hot buttered Bombora proto Astro toy many years ago, 9'2" great intermediate board weighing in at about 9kgs.
Pulled a footstrap plug and was then used to surf on, they were the top boards back then. Being a Bombora and made out of fibreglass, so much lighter than the plastic ones.
Here is a photo or 2 of the old wind energy board 8'6" . Great board, the woodgrain looked that good you could use them for a cheese platter after a sail!!!.
Is now retired to be made into a man cave bar table.
Here is the cutloose 8'6" mal, great board , chucks a bucket of spray still and very nice looking when the wax is cleaned off, cheers , Good old Days!!!

Wow, I had a Bombora Mk 1 (cut down One Design) too. It would be great to find one as a museum piece!
