The brand new AFS 1000R Race foils have just landed in Australia, fitting the 105cm mast and relatively short 88cm fuselage.

Today was my first session with it (big thanks to Remi @ WindsurfingShed for importing them).
TLDR, the new AFS 1000mm foil is AWESOME!

The foil is intricate, very high aspect design, with little winglets, and a razorblade thin tail foil.
Riding the foil for my first time on a 95cm wide board, I found the flight to be very balanced, accelerating quickly and with stability, without much fore/aft rebalance required.

One of my first runs was 18kts in about 9 kts of wind! Mind you, it took a fair bit of effort to pump up onto the plane (with my inexperience). GPS Post here: gpsteamchallenge.com.au/sailor_session/show?date=2019-04-06&team=33
Max speed for the day was 20kts, and there is more available. I was impressed for my first day out! Super stable on all points of sail!

Today I tested the gear near the runway at Kyeemagh, NSW, riding on an iSonic Foil 147 board (note the 80-odd tail width is too narrow for maximum drive upwind!), TR16 9.3 (Massive Lift!), AFS 105 mast and brand new 1000mm foil.

Wind felt like 6-16kts between about 4 and 6 pm.

Great report. As I mentioned elsewhere, efficient wings/foils don't need the raw cm2 to work in light wind. I have a somewhat similar wing (not quite as high aspect) and, like you, the acceleration in light wind once you are out of the water is breathtaking.

How big is the stab?
Quite a high aspect profile apparently.

Finally managed to get out on Sat with the new AFS 1000r foil set.
Having used to the 105 mast with the 800 wing last year I was after something to improve light air performance.
Well I think I found it.Coupled the foil with Exocet RF 91 foil board and 8.5 twin cam sail.Wind a southerly, quite up and down 7 to 13 knots. Much much faster in being able to pump up onto the foil and stay there.Once foiling accelaration is impressive and is so so stable .Cannot comment on gybing because its a work in progress. Was thinking it would be ok up to around 15 knots then switch over to the 800

After using the AFS85 last year and later adding the F800 wing for lighter winds, I was looking for something to step up to a higher speed. Seeing berowne's report I got hold of the R1000 (thanks again WindsurfingShed) and went out for the first time yesterday. (JP135, 85 mast and 8.6m Serverne R8 - wind 5-12knts). First flight within seconds and oh yes, this is faster, a lot faster!

Despite my moderately effective pumping technique, I was able to get flight earlier. I found that during the last few pumps, when you are starting to skim the surface, the acceleration takes over and you rapidly transition to full flight. In similar winds the F800 felt like it would sit nose high awaiting a little more grunt before going, this doesn't, it just gets a sniff of flight and it's off.

The apparent wind quickly takes over and the longitudinal stability is excellent. One difference from the standard F700 & F800 wings, there is no whistle which I always thought came from the mast - apparently not.

Whilst I'm still working on my gybes (touching down just prior to exit), it felt like the added speed and glide would easy carry me through - just need more practise. One last thing, definitely wearing boots all season - this thing is so sharp one kick whilst water starting and your 'pinky' will be fish food!

Yep I attempted a water start a couple of weeks ago, forgot how wide the front wing is, luckily I only scraped my shin, nice bruise but could have been much worse

So my water starting technique has adapted to the potential presence of a foil... I don't kick anymore, except straight below my body - front foot only!

I usually step on the foil to waterstart, easy peasy !

In the photo, the wings, left to right, are R1000, F700, and F800. I have the latter two. The F800 is really nice for light air and low speed flying.

I wish the AFS wings were a bit more affordable. I have the 85/F700 that's great for windy days but I'll have to wait to try the others when the budget is better.

Does anyone recommend the AFS-85 for a first time 66kg foiler looking to learn in sub 16 knot winds?

It's a nice, easy foil. I've only ridden it with the F700 so I can't comment on the low end with the 800 or 1000 but I've had a blast with mine in higher winds. It's stability really gives confidence. Glissattitude's tests always ranked it pretty high for stability and ease of use. I know that all the big wings are in vogue for the bigger guys but at your size, the F800 will scale up to similar size as the big Slingshot wings for them.

It's one of the least expensive all carbon options which is a plus if you sail salty water.

The AFS-85 is a relatively inexpensive all-carbon foil. Friends who have them really like them. Lightweight, stiff, easy to ride.

Sailworks tells me that the R1000 front wing would not work well with my AFS-2. Dang. Use it only on the AFS-105. You need a really long mast to keep the wingtips in the water when heeled over for upwind. 88cm is too short. OK.

I've been speaking with Sailworks too. Big fan of their business. I think I've read that you have the F-800 wing? I think that might be a really good combo with the AFS-85, and a good deal for all carbon. For a first time foiler I think I'd want either an infinity 76/84 or F-800 to start with.

How would I find out if the AFS-85 is centered/balanced for a Wizard 125? I asked Dale and he thought it would work but I don't expect him (or anyone in particular) to know all combos of boards and foils. Is it known that Slingshot boards work ok with AFS? Maybe some people in Seattle have tried this combo? I have no way of measuring these myself.

A friend has the F800 on a AFS-85 in Seattle. He likes it a lot. For my AFS-2 (88cm mast) I run both the F700 and F800 wings.

The F800 is a total game-changer for light or inconsistent winds.

So, if you want to know whether your AFS-85 will balance on your ss board, just measure it. I made a youtube about this a couple years ago. Since the AFS-85 mast is very close to vertical you don't need to use the right angle tool that I used in the youtube. I am still using those settings.

Has anyone tried the R750? I wonder what the top speed might be, and if the short(ish) fuselage might be a disadvantage?
