I'm purchasing a Slingshot foil for my Slingshot Dialer 130L board Monday on my day off. Last Chance on any more advice on these 2 wings, the i76 and i84. I'm on a lake, fresh water, want to go on light winds around the 9-15 mph range for now, and getting the Gamma 68 for windy days once more experienced. I'm 170 pounds, 5'11" tall. My shop is steering me towards the i76, based on the same info I'm sharing here. I'm hearing the i84 isn't enough difference for early lift for non heavy riders than the i76 to really notice. The i76 is faster, stall speed is higher, less drag than the i84. So should I go with the i76 or i84???

I'm 35lbs heavier but would use the I84 all day long on fresh water at 9-15mph, it will help you glide through the holes longer and you can later upgrade to the 48 rear for added low wind speed.

At 186lbs I love my 84, but have never used the 76. I tried a similar Moses to the 76 and it was rad and felt a bit faster than the 84. I have heard of at least one person who had both and sold 84cm. I sail similar wind speeds as you describe and would probably be fine with the 76 too. I lile the speed of the 84 for catchin small swell at my spot. I have had it up to 25mph and it has never felt too big.

For your weight I would choose the i76. The 84 will feel way to big in anything but the lightest breezes

if you get the 76, you dont need the gamma.

8-15 mph sounds like 84 winds though, it would be great if you could run the 99 on the dialer. Then you would just get the 76 now and add the 99 if you needed better light wind performance.

You will probably progress off the dialer pretty soon so maybe this 76 now followed by the 99 in the future could work.

I've used both wings a lot but not so much in the conditions you describe.

I'd take CoreAS's advice - he has a lot of experience with those foils in light winds on freshwater

84 is easier to learn on and good for lighter winds and tops out earlier
i still use both

Is it a myth that the i84 has a better low end range, that it lifts earlier with less board speed and less wind than the i76?

I forgot to mention that my largest sail is a 6.8 Ezzy Zeta that I will most likely use for the lightest wind conditions that I'm out on.

most of the guys here use the Slingshot foil and almost all of them with the i76 wing. If your spot is a gusty spot, you don't have a big advantage with the i84. You need to wait for the gust anyway and a good pump is better than a bigger wing. I am actually over 200lbs (97kg) and I use the i76 and after 5 months of wind foiling the biggest sail is my 6.4 Ezzy Zeta. In steady winds, you can gain some with the bigger wing.

When the wind is in the 5-10 mph range, it's blowing very consistent, with no gusts. When the wind gets into the 11 mph on up range the gusts start kicking in, but not crazy. The gusts at those wind strengths are no more than 5 mph over. But since these wings are pricey, I'm trying to pick every ones brain on their knowledge and personal experience so I can get the most benefit from either the i84 or i76.

By the way, the foil package I'm getting comes with the Gamma 68 wing and my choice of either the i76 or i84 Wing added to the package at a nominal extra price.

I have both. Unless your velocity instrumented, your not going to be able to tell which foil gets up first. However the 84 glides noticeable better thru the lulls. Especially with the 48cm stabilizer. I don't foil at the Gorge, San Francisco Bay, or Waimea. I foil in Mid America where one puff is 20mph followed by a 5mph lull, over and over again. The 84 is much more conducive to this type of sailing. And I suspect the 99 would be better. Hope this helps!

Interesting conditions, as it's amazing to hear how you adapt and make the best of your wind situation. Yes, this helps a lot! All my boxes are starting to get checked off.

Ok, so...

1) Both wings lift at pretty much the same board speed, but not enough to notice a difference.

2) i76 is faster and has more range than the i84, but the i84 has a lower stall speed.


3) i84 gets through lulls better, but has less top end speed than the i76. The i84 is more stable.

4) For the wind range I want, 10 mph or realistically 9-15 mph, the i84 is making more sense, but as it gets windier than this, the i84 may become a hand full, then I can pop the Gamma 68 on. But yes, my goal is to get out in the lightest winds to maximize my tow and the 68 can be my higher wind wing.

The i84 is sounding pretty sweet to me.

Am I missing anything here?? Anything more to consider??

My very first SS wing was the i76 and I was blown away with the performance but it was fairly windy. I couldn't believe anything would be better, then the i84 came out and to be honest the i76 took a back seat unless it was consistently over 16 mph. I do still go back and forth between the 2 wings.

I currently have the i99, i84, i76 and TC68 and they are all phenomenal wings for each given wind strength.

In Dallas we have a range of riders from 155 lbs to 205 lbs, last Sunday the wind was 10-18 mph with 5mph holes.
5 of us was on the i84 and one rider on the i99.

With regards to the local conditions you described, The i84 will foil up quicker than the i76 if you use the 48 rear wing and the i84 will definitely keep you gliding through holes much longer.

Don't worry about the wing being bigger, it actually gets slower the windier it is (like a speed limiter)... and again at 9-15 mph with a 6.8 that really is what the i84 was designed for.

I was in the same indecision between the SS 76 and 84 wings when I bought the foil and as a complete novice I asked for as much feed back and advice as possible before taking the plunge and buying. So far after some mega wipe out's am getting a feel of the flying all tho not very long flights and very shaky . my plan is to buy the 99 when I've cracked foiling properly cuss want super light wind flight and low wind stall speed so 99 will be on my list .
My board is a tabou rocket plus 123 (77 wide) and at my 80 kilo is so far working for me lerning this foil thing and a bonus at the moment when I put a fin under the board it has good turn of speed too. For me the foil is just for light wind stuff but mabe as a couple of my windsurfing mate's in time it could be all that I do .

If you aren't going to ride for ~4 months I'd wait on a purchase. There are supposed to be new things coming down the pipe for 2020 which can mean better deals on the existing stuff.

Too late, I just purchased the i84 and 68 package. Thx again!

I received my foil package yesterday. I'm stoked!! Looks amazing!! What's even more amazing is, it feels like the i84 wing is lighter than the Gamma 68 wing. Carbon is pretty amazing stuff! Lots of hardware in the foil kit.

When I purchased my Slingshot Dialer board, it came with some bolts and a vent screw. Beside the vent screw, is that hardware extra? The foil kit with the Gamma 68cm wing and rear wing, mast, fuesallodge etc, seems to have all the hardware. Also, the i84 wing came with hardware too. Can that hardware be used with the Gamma 68cm front wing? That would be nice to have extra spare hardware for the future.

I'm in Cleveland, Ohio on the south shore of Lake Erie. I sail out of Wendy Park, lower left of picture. In October the wind is predominately out of the southeast, blowing over the buildings, stadiums, and piles of bulk material, and it chops the hell out of the wind. That's my dilemma. Its a good foiling beach since it drops off to foiling depth in 25 ft, but the condition are tough. I'm thinking a I99 wing for next year to glide thru the lulls. There are some small lakes that run in the south to north direction, but they are 75 miles away versus 6 miles to Lake Erie.
