Really interesting listening to Costa-Hoevel on Nic Goyard's setup. High lift wing set well forward, so no use in wearing the rear footstraps, and he's able to keep himself and the rig more upright and therefore point higher. He really was in a class by himself.

Live now:

Goyard's setup - really all the leaders - features a super-loose top leach. It's basically flopping free when beating and nearly so on the short reaches - fluttering with no load at all except when dead downwind. The IQFoil guys - perhaps on smaller sails - seem to have much more perimeter tension.

And he is 15 kilo lighter and using a 11m when most others are using 10m.

It starting to look like formula fin with respect to sail sizes. The formula foil equipment registration pdf shows a number of sailors with 11, 10 & 9m sails. 12.5m next? I find the Phantom 10m2 huge & heavy. Haven't tried an 11m. Kudos & respect to the sailors that handle them with such aplomb.

As a lightweight, Rick, I weep for the PWA slalom monsters no longer being able to use their size and strength to dominate competitions. (Mortefon and Rutkowski seem to be holding their own)

You sure? Nico is a lot heavier than his brother, probably 85kg or so, Thomas is what 75, is the rest of the fleet is 100kg? All the photos I've seen from the gold fleet racing Nico was on a 10.0, the wind range and drag penalty cross over for an 11 is pretty small. Ben mentioned him using an 11 in commentary but I don't think he was in the Gold fleet races from what I've seen.

Yes, he's put on a bit of weight, he's a nice big unit now, saw him last month, would say he's close to 90kg. He's very muscular comparde to last year.

Amazing video. Someone sooner or later is just going to get diced in one of the those fleet-crossings on port tack.
