I have a jp 135 foilboard and starboard super cruzer foil . I am struggling to feel comfortable with my back foot in the strap and prefer it just in front and just inboard of the rear strap . The flight is fine and I have no issue getting onto the foil and maintaining height . Any thoughts on adjustments I could / should make to enable me to be more comfortable in the back straps ? ( ps they're already as forward and inboard as they will go )

You could go without a back strap.
Some crew here in WA inc myself prefer no back strap as it allows a range of foot movement especially
through lulls on free ride foils -Some crew prefer back straps.
i def use them on my race set up.

yes; absolutely no need for the back strap with the SC especially on a wide board like yours.

I was using the rear straps to reach upwind tight on a 122 sb but apart from that; it felt so much easier with no strap at the back on a wide board.

It sounds like your balance point is perhaps a bit too far forward. Can you move your main wing further aft? Also, have you tried to move your sail mast base further aft?

AFAIK, the JP135 is deep tuttle. Edit: nvm - not sure that my experience is going to be helpful



steview, how much weight are you putting through the harness and how much do you weigh (if you don't mind my asking). These things will affect where your back foot is comfortable. I absolutely agree with others that you can just ignore the back strap with your set up.

I weigh 80kg and although i'm Using harness I wouldn't say I was transferring much weight through it . Mast base is pretty much in the middle . My concern was that if I moved it back to get into back strap that I would get too much lift . Watching sams video you would think I would need it a long way back with super cruzer foil but i'm getting plenty of lift with it in the middle and rear foot just in front of strap

Move the stabilizer back or the mast base forward to weight the back foot.

I know i'm Being thick but why would moving the mast base forward weight my back foot ? I would have assumed moving it back would have rocked weight onto my back foot ? Maybe i'm misunderstanding the mechanics of it .

Moving the mast base forward moves the rigs weight forward. So you counter it by weighting the back foot to keep the board flying.

but in all honesty as others have said, Unless you want to chase upwind angles, i wouldnt bother with the back straps.

Heh Sean, do you have more info in this? Do you mean a front wing change possible as well?

I'm using Supercruiser with Fanatic Stingray - back strap = more power/speed - I always use it to get as far upwind as possible, especially as I have straps inboard, and it helps control in rough water
Then I mostly take back foot out for swell riding/downwinding as I move it around continually - back strap never gets in my way, but this may be an issue on other boards?
For me, keep the back strap - adds a lot of performance for zero cost

Back strap also works great for carving downwind. Keep your foot planted and move your weight - worth a try

Scary tho! I am doing it more often, but managing sudden acceleration in gusts and down wave face with back foot in sure tests the reflexes!

Hi Swindy, I got the Supercruiser and JP135 as well
what position do you put your mastbase and front footstraps?

Front footstrap outboard in the back holes only because use the gtr as well. Mast base a few CM either side of centre of the track. Further forward with the gtr. Forward in stronger wind and back in lighter wind. The stabiliser adjustment also affects where the mast base goes so if you leave it set in the middle for a few sessions of varying winds you will find a sweet spot for your base in relation to the wind strength. Once you have this mess with the stab a bit to find its sweet spot for you. I'm 95kg so if you are lighter you may have to shift things more forward than me.
My preference is to have neutral foot pressure going upwind hanging in the harness so when going across and down wind I don't have to fight to keep the nose down. So that's what I aim for and works for me. Hope this helps.
Now I'm using the smaller wing in stronger winds I haven't needed to put the mast base forward of centre.

Yes a little , it's called the RAZR available in 220 and 250
Front wing change is easy and already available in 1500 and 2000 for the classic SC

if you want more choice, best move is to get the quick lock fuselage (awesome piece of equipment) and then have access to :

Not the boards' problem. Matching a low aspect foil designed for sails <6.5 with a board designed for 5.5-8.5sqm sails is the problem. I wouldnt want to match up these two bits of kit any day if I had a choice. Smaller board or different foil. The FoilX is what the foil was designed for.

Same as trying to use a 4.5 wavesail on a 140L slalomboard and thinking its strange you cant comfortably reach the footstraps..

Well, it works, but the foilX has 10L more volume, but is 10cm less wide, 35 cm less long and has completely different (more inboard) footstrap positions. The JP135 is a freerace board, and the supercruiser is a freewave type foil. If you look at the Neilpryde/F4 Carbon foil the board was designed for you can see its about furthest apart from the supercruiser as can be.

I recently used this plank from a wooden cupboard to pump foil and wingfoil with, any plank works, not ideal..

Especially since the tail takes so much less force it would drop a lot of weight.

Took the JPlank 135 and supercruiser with 1300 front wing attached out yesterday in near perfect winter conditions. Managed about 75km from go to wo but the GPS battery died at 63km. It may not be perfectly matched but would the grin on my face been any bigger with a shorter narrower board. May be a little but not much.
Biggest problem ATM is availability and to many, affordability of a specific foil board. I have waited months for foil gear I have ordered in the past and now. Heaps of people are still using slalom, formula and free-ride boards and still having fun on them. Let's face it, far more foils than boards have been sold so far so it will be a while before most people are riding perfectly matched gear.
So if you have a JPlank and a free ride foil ignore the back straps and just have some fun on it.

Where is that - and was it weedy?

JJ, this is Dawesville looking north towards Liptons, deep water and no weed

JJ I, got 1 piece of weed on the stab and got caught on a crab pot rope so no prob for the distance covered. Nice little wind swells blowing down the channel which would have been better if the tide was running out against the wind. Great spot in any direction once out in the middle but SE E right round to NW are best.

I am setting up old formula's to race with, I am going to fit raceboard railing straps to them so I can move my feet around, seems like a good solution to finding a sweet spot in different conditions or angles plus less likely to get stuck in them during a crash. Just going to put in one extra forward footstrap insert per strap.
