So I am looking for a new board, I'm pretty much a beginner, I've had a few lessons and surfed a few times on my own on my 7'0 softboard. I am 50kg and about 170cm tall and fit. I want something better and more fun, something I can progress further on as I don't think the softboard can really do much for me for much longer.
My dad has a mate that has been making surfboards for 50 years and said he will make me whatever I want. What do you think I should get, including length and any suggestions for tail shape?

The best person to ask is the guy making your board....all depends on your height, weight, fitness, and ability.
JSMatrix, thank you for your reply, you are right. However I have already talked to him, and he recommends a 6'2 fibreglass board. I was just looking for other opinions just to see what others thought and also out of interest. But I haven't decided on a tail yet :)

Best bit of advice IMHO. You'll send so much time trying to reinvent the wheel when they will tick 80% of in the first go..
Keep it up though and have fun..
If he has a heap of boards maybe try a couple and see what you like?
You will quickly form an opinion on what you do and dont like by giving a few a spin.
If there is one you fall in love with (and it does happen!) then it will be easy for him to make one for you.
