Going to bali alone in april
will most likely be staying around canggu and ulus
anyone know any decent surf camps/hostels which are cheap and are good for meeting some kooky euro surfers? :D
No not really, that area is totally unexplored. You will be basically staying in the jungle. Hope you survive. On the up side I have heard some people say there are good waves there. Happy searching.
I like staying here on the Bukit, its right in the middle. Not really walking distance anywhere apart from an overpriced yank owned cafe. But an easy scooter ride to the SE Bukit waves. Go the most expensive Deluxe room for like $40 which has AC, close to pool, big to store your boards inside, cable tv, very reasonable small Bintang price of $2, hot water & good speed internetz. Does not have a fridge, but place has icy cold cheap beer, so happy to buy it from them. They also bring food to your room when ready & is also good/cheap...note turnoff after 2nd Bingin rd is hard to recognise, its like a steep paved driveway but is actually a public road. The super expensive Anantara Uluwatu Bali Resort sign is much easier to see than the tiny Medori Putih Homestay sign.

speak with slim at Bali waves
Slim loves a beer. If you love a beer too then give him a buzz.
Alternately, Nick at Waveguru has a great homestay setup and will certainly get you into a few waves.
If you're looking for kooky euros, check out the east coast between Keramas and Nusa Dua. Drunk Russians trying to decapitate crew with their minimals has become commonplace.
