Anybody know of a key safe that blocks signal from the key? On my car, if the key is close enough to the door it'll open when locked.
If I stash my key in a simple magnetic box, my car is basically open to being accessed - easily.
An aqua pack is an option, would rather leave my key with my car though, in a box/lock that blocks the signal.
Ive read the faraday cage blocks this, anyone bought a lock/box that they use while in the water?

Have you tried wrapping it in foil, then stashing it? A kind of faraday cage.

I read that somewhere, no I haven't.
I can try that as a temporary fix, but if the current stash box is found it's not locked and the car is gone - Ideally I'm after a keysafe lockable box which blocks the signal.
Plus, what if I forget my tinfoil!!

Or could you take the battery out and lock it with an old school key

My wifes car does the same, however the key has a release from the electronic bit and i found if you physically lock it from outside it wont open unless unlocked with the actual manual key.

i just attached that to my wetsuit and went for my surf, car was still there when i got back. Great success.

I bought my key safe through shapers and it came with a ziplock foil bag, but I don't have a smart key so can't tell you if it works or not.

WHat car do you drive. My Prado also has a small piece that slips out and i can manually lock car. I just leave it on my wetsuit all the time.

Also be careful, i used a Keysafe lock box but after getting out late one night, no one around and no lights found it impossible to read the code to open.

Lastly worth checking with you insurance company as to what constitutes theft. If they break in and get my keys, (IE i have locked manually) than my car is covered.

Just checked out the Shapers one, a little light duty but better than what I'm using!
My car is keyless, so it doesn't have a manual lock (keyhole, whatever).
I'm gonna keep searching for a magnetic back key safe, so it's not on show and maybe try the foil thing.

Older cars were sooo much easier!

I have a keyless entry and a surflock. was testing last night. If I stand next to the door with the fob in the keylock, I can open the door, but if the keylock is attached to the wheel rim, which is where I attach it when in the water , then the door remains secure. Maybe just check for a safe spot on your car where the signal isn't strong enough?

Ive tried that, putting it closer to the front doors activates them and putting it closer to the boot opens that! That's why I'm chasing a signal blocking one, it'll likely just do the same otherwise if doesn't block the signal somehow.

I've found the front tow point being the best place to put the lock on a Prado. Everywhere else seems to be in signal range

Nope, my exhaustive testing was done when the car was delivered new...

I have had the solution for some time..........a hail damaged 2009 Mazda I often forget leaving the keys on the roof......... my towel inside is probably worth more.

I really don't want to sound like a smart arse, but have a read of the owners manual.
I bought a car with keyless entry 6 months ago. Salesman and service dept told me there was no way to disable the keyless entry.
Day I got the car, I was reading through the manual pretty much for fun.
Turns out that if you hit the lock button on the key, followed by the lock spot on the door handle, it disables the keyless entry in the locked mode. Can only unlock the car by pressing the unlock button on the key itself (then the keyless is back to active).
Works great - but I really should read up on the insurance implications.

The one common factor was that all cars had their keys in a surf lock

Cops are shaking their head at what we think is a good idea and said YouTube it and see why

This thread has opened up a can of worms!!
Still haven't found a solution but an Aquapac seems like the way to go, keep the key away from the car altogether - should be ok in winter with a wetsuit, just a little riskier in summer unless you have super reliable zips on your boardies.

can confirm the tin foil works along with the zip lock bag posted above.

make a lil tin foil pouch and keep it in your lock

I use the Masterlock heavy duty one from Bunnings - 5414.
Is this as easy to break into? Couldn't find a YouTube video for it.

I had the same situation but found by getting a "surf key" cut from the key inside the smart fob then manually locking the door with the "surf key" the fob was immobilised until the "surf key" was used to unlock the car

The "surf key" is then attached to me and its all good

The same as Boothie and JB have both said, works for me

I will never forget the day I learned the hard way when I returned to my car and it was gone. There are some scumbags out there . Either use a keysafe or take a key with you.
