Hi all. I am doing a second trip to the ments in Aug.
Im happy with my shorty (hypto) and step up (dhd sweet spot 2).
I am looking at taking something with higher volume to save my back on the good but not great days.
I normally surf 27 to 30 ltr but would love to take a 35 plus that still goes good in barrelling waves.
Had a mate on a 7.5 fish last trip thst went well.
Any suggestions?
Retro possibly like an MR twin or a Tomo etc?

Have you considered the Tomo Omni?

A wide fishy tail in barrelling waves Wouldn't be my recommendation, your better off with something similar to the hypto. Wide up front, foam under the chest & a narrow tail. Maybe a 6'0 hypto, they're about 35L just put larger fins on it to counter the extra float. Otherwise boards with that outline are a dime a dozen these days

Take something different to keep it interesting. I took this tip score (I did do a resto on it) to the ments a few yrs ago 6"2" x 19. I ended up surfing it more than my thrusters. plenty of foam and they love a good barrel!

Funny you mention getting a bigger Hypto.
mines a 5'6 and goes brilliant in smaller stuff.
Just a PITA to paddle back out after a wave.
A bloke told me they don,t go so well if you upsize, but happy to be proven wrong

6'4" Firewire Unibrow for you will paddle like a long board and will handle barrels no problems plus over 3 foot will be reasonably loose..........unfortunately they just dont make them any more.

Agree about bigger Hyptos bloke a couple of trips ago in the Ments had one caught heaps of waves but rode like a pig IMHO.

They're not supposed to go so well. I was surprised I could ride a 5'8 & it went well once I got a wave but was hard work. I've got a 6'0 which is my most used shorty at the moment. I have Shapers S9 sides & a Solus rear fin. Really fun board up to head & 1/2. I've surfed it up to about triple head, but over double head on sucky takeoffs you really feel like you have to nurse your bottom turn. So I'd agree with my friend Ifocus it can ride like a pig in bigger waves...I'm suggesting it coz you say you have another board for a step up & just looking for something higher volume for the not great days. Also has great resale value if it doesn't work out. Maybe even just going a 5'10 if your keen on the shape. For reference in regard to the hypto I'm 6'1 78kgs 45yo...loving it .....but look around, there really are so many options these days Might do a bit of window shopping for ya tomorrow if I get time...whats your height, weight age & surfing level

Mate I own a sci-fi, great board but once it gets overhead it tends to redline, go the omni

Hadn't noticed that board before, the description says its a step up board & hints at heavier glass " for customers looking to bring added strength and stiffness to their boards"....so dunno, I have a psychedelic germ I love in up to head 1/2 sucky waves or fat to not sucky up to triple head that surfs great in down to waist high sucky waves which is based on the regular shred sled design... if that is any kinda comparison, probably not.....but hey if your chasing a board for smaller occasional barreling waves, I doubt you need a step up heavier glassed board unless you've changed your mind on what your chasing.

I have heard good things about the Omni but from mates who typically ride diff boards to me so can't honestly comment...sci fi I've heard mixed reviews, either loving it or not. Doesn't appear to be a versatile board.

I was going to get a sci fi shaped but opted for a "Love Buzz" 6'2 instead that I really enjoy in over head, but it goes great in head high peak/waist high shoulder as well. I use it mostly in over head 1/2 otherwise I need to move my front foot forward & back a little too much. I reckon a 6'0 would be better in smaller waves for me personally but it wasn't what I bought it for. I think it might be a better option than the SS King for smaller waves.

wow the howard has my attention.
I can't find a volume calculator for the board though.
What do you reckon the 6'6" volume would be and would it go ok over there on the fatter days.
I can,t justify going any longer!!

Me too
V3 6'1 in Bali/ Lombok up to 2xhead face thruster ..till I snapped it
replaced with a 6'2 V3 bit of extra foam but goes just as good
best boards I've ridden in small knee to waist and up to 2 x head ( it's on the edge at that size)
