Hi guys just curious to know if you have been to the Mentawai's on a surf trip. I'm thinking of going mid 2012.

Wavepark is the general area but that is the name of the camp, Hideaways is the break out the front of camp. They have renamed the camp Hideaways Surf Resort I think, I havnt spoken to Christie for a while.

That in its self is a mission!! Bali - Jakata - Padang. There are other ways but I think these flights all have transfers, comming home was different

Many years ago, we found a surf operator based in Perth $50/day + plus your own grog. one way. They just wanted fuel money to get up there. Perth-Carnavon-Xmas Is- Mentawis-Padang All up we spent 12days getting to Padang inc 3 days surfing. The boat was the Sans Souci

Getting to Padang is dead easy, if your time poor. Fly to Singapore and then it's a $50 flight to Padang.

you can fly direct to jakarta (although most detour via bali) which means you can avoid the board tax(100USD per board ) in Bali if you have more than 3 boards and either overnight in jakarta and then get up early and fly to padang on the am flight or if you get to jakarta early enough you can overnight in padang before whichever resort /boat trip picks you up
i have overnighted in jakarta most times as the the night life in jakarta is mildly entertaining!!
both resorts are good, wavepark and kandui.... but kandui is a little closer to a larger selection of waves, boats are good too ,but you spend a little more time surfing with the land based resorts as opposed to surfing a variety of waves ..
the only other thing to be before you go is paddle fit, no point spending the moolah and then having to miss surfs because you're too stuffed to move (although the best remedy is cold bintangs of an evening )
(kandui has air con in the huts as well)
surfing mecca !!

Nice post Sparki.....Wonder how much the bloke that missed that first wave of the set played "if only" games in his head after that.
