You may want to reconsider your Maldives surfing holiday after watching this

Filthy! What can ya do... my goodness! I guess it is the same as places like Bali where you see their drains full of waste waiting for the rains to come. They don't give a ****. I guess they're underdeveloped countries though, so maybe they don't have the ability to do better. Australia is so lucky! These places and their governments are filthy and corrupt.
Makes you wonder why the hell we are getting slugged with a carbon tax while other country's just don't even care ![]()
Thanks for posting kernowkiter.
Kinda similar to the problems they face in bali I guess (see www.abc.net.au/foreign/bali---they-paved-paradise/4013362).
So glad I live in Aus.
Locky, I'd rather be part of the solution than the problem.
I didn't watch it all, looked like a pile of trash to me, sure there is rubbish, but the first bit to me looked like a rubbish tip, found everywhere, remember the maldives only has island and can't bury their waste in landfill. Like us.
The Maldives is not filthy, it is one of the nicest / cleanest places on earth, the water is crystal clear, much cleaner than over here. They have very little heavy industry and don't pollute the planet anywhere near as much as countries such as ours. The people are quiet and respectful and for the most part live of what the ocean provides, and do not live in a disposable world like us.
they don't have sewage in the streets etc like Bali.. It is nothing like Bali. It is a well developed country with a very high level of education. The issue is they have no where to put waste, like any island. It easy for us to sit here and throw stones but just cause we have lots of land to bury the massive amount of waste we produce does not mean that others are fithy or polluting the planet, when in fact they do less damage than industrial developed country and live a much less damaging lifestyle than us in developed countries.
Think you are missing the point a bit JP.. Its not the rubbish from the locals that they are burning its all the rubbish from the hotels, ie people who visit the islands and have no regard or care for the rubbish they leave behind. As the guy in the video said the island which now holds the rubbish was a pristine untouched island 20 years ago, me, you and everybody else who visits other countries need to be responsible and respectful when disregarding their waste otherwise we have another Bali on our hands..
Yep I get that and agree, people should be respectful no matter where they visit and also in there own country. The 4 corners article on Bali last week was good, it highlighted many issues Tourism causes, some of these are and some arent thes same as those faced by the Maldives. They have a whole other range of issues, their most pressing is rising water level and the fact the island are very low lying and are beiling swallowed up.......
But that wasn't my point. my point is how can a developed society sit there and criticise a country who has no other option, they can't just dig a big hole and bury it like Australia or any other country with large land area.
There only means of real income is tourism and fishing exports, although fishing is way less than the money earned by tourism. so in a global economy to survive they need to produce an income, just as Australia does with mining.
tourism is their only way and this is the trade off. Just like Australia being dug up for mining, open cut mines are horrible things but an economic necessity. Which is worse, well you decide?
And all land is pristine before it is developed or used for something.
