Hi
I just purchased a new surfboard its a 7' x22" x3" and 1ft from the top and bottom is about 16" wide, 51ltr shortboard thruster. I'm around 100kg+ and 176cm 28yrs old.
I used to surf Bells many years ago when I was younger and in shape.
I now live in QLD I would say I'm beginner/intermediate. I've surfed long boards recently and had no problems paddeling, standing up, turning etc.
I tried to paddle out the back at burleigh heads yesterday on my new board I couldn't get very far. I didn't go to the point to paddel out and felt a rip pull me down the beach
(maybe this is why?)
it was very hard to paddle. I'm worried my board does not have enough volume or I'm just not in shape and out of practice. ![]()
Any advice would be appreciated. ![]()
The board is too small for your current fitness level. Keep the board, work on the fitness. See you out there.
I was in a very similar situation. Except had inherited a brand new 6'2 shortboard which I had no issues with before I stopped surfing 7 years ago. I just couldn't use the thing. 110kg and 185cm - and ** house stamina and paddle power. this was about a year ago
I ended up using a 68L softecch 7ft foamie for about the first 6 months - kept me frothing on getting in the water and sorted out the fitness. Then got a 6'6 with 55L (again a foamie) - used for 3 months or so. Now I am Back on a 6'0 shortboard/funboard with 42l and fairly wide - it runs really well for me - although I'm probs 20kegs lighter now.
I dont know if that helps but if it does the takeaway would be In the meantime pickup a 6-7 ft foamie with 65L plus volume to keep you in the water and bring the fitness up to where you're stoked with the new board you just got.https://www.softechsoftboards.com/70-handshaped-softboard
second hand there are a few floating around - as new the prices get a bit silly for a softboard -
Thanks everyone for the advice. So basically I'm too fat for my board and need to get into shape. ![]()
Guess I'll start working on my cardio. Any suggestions for good workouts to increase cardio without equipment for sutfing.
That 7'er. See you...

However I believe that board has the volume and as mentioned just get out there try and try again it will just click one day.
