Hello folks

I'm trying to find out if this crack in the fin box is something to be concerned about, or not. Any ideas?

Yeah it's rooted. time for a new board!

looks like it's been there a while. Wouldn't worry about it. just back off a 1/4 turn when you put your fin in.

The grub screw tightens nicely (taking care not to over-tighten).
I guess if I bottom out or hit something then there's maybe a higher chance of the fin pulling out.
It seems to still be nice and solid.

If you hit something when moving under normal conditions, it won't bust out because of the weakened grub screw thread. You'd have to hit the fin in the opposite direction, as if you were riding the board fins first.

Is it because the force under normal conditions would effectively push the fin harder into the box, whereas if riding fins first the force would be the opposite i.e. pull the fin out?

I guess any force will act along the whole length of the box (not just the plug area)?

yep, you've got it.
When you take the fin out, it rotates/hinges about the front of the fin tang. The grub screw is not structurally integral to the performance of the fin, it just prevents it from falling out. thats why you don't need to tighten it more than finger tight.

Bloody hell - I'm confused now! I would say that when inserting or removing, the fin slots in and hinges at the rear of the box (the grub screw is located at the front of the fin) ....which sounds like the opposite of what you're saying.
I must be misunderstanding you?

ah crap, I'm confusing it with the FCS2 system hinging. Yeah you're right, the screw is at the front. maybe all my advice has been wrong.

My view is that for the fin to pull out it'd have to be a pretty hard impact - hard enough to effectively cause the grub screw to smash through the plug (as there isn't any opportunity for the crack to 'open'), if that makes sense?

In that case - I guess it's no different to if the crack didn't exist (i.e. such a hard impact would probably wreck any box).

...or would anyone disagree?

I'm wondering what caused the crack to form in the first place ...and if it is a common issue with these boxes?

Just lay off the hard carves for now!
