cool Asea,,i also had a nice wave at 5.45 this morning on my 10' Mctavish redline longboard.
is there anywhere on sea breeze i could ask about cross stepping tips.
i would be the worst cross stepper in history.
I'm still totally lame at it but hears a couple of tips I've picked up on with Cross Stepping:
1) NEVER shuffle, its a bad habit, it looks ugly and its harder to break a bad habit than create a new one. Some people say that the CS is overrated vs the shuffle but once you start to do it properly it is chalk and cheese for momentum/balance/smooth/glide.
2) Posture, correct posture with weight back and shoulders straight and over hips is so crucial. Its hardly ever talked about but makes a massive difference.
3) Positioning, this is tricky but you need to be in the pocket at the bottom section of the wave where the wave is most critical which leads to...
4) Go when you think you cant, if go when the wave is flat the board wont get sucked into the wave and the front will sink, the wave needs to be steeper, tail in the curl and the force of the wave will grab the tail and hold it in place.
5) Get your arms up and out for balance and this also helps with weight distribution.
6) Get yourself a Goof Board and practice, strengthens your ankles and Achilles but also gets you into the right habit, stepping on a GB is HARD but get it down and it makes a huge difference...
7) Lastly and most importantly, go with the wave, read it, feel it, set it up and let the wave do the work and when you do this the sensation of connection with the wave is AMAZING!!!
