I have, if it's safe.

Did it yesterday at DY, It was only 1 foot or so and the guy was asian, there was no malice on my part, I didn't yell or make any gestures.

I had been on the wave for a long time, I was moving quickly across the face to beat the section and I was thinking, "any second now he's going to realise I'm here and he'll stop paddling", but no, he didn't.

When the nose was about the height of my shin and only about 500mm away, and I knew he had it so I gently reached down with both hands, grabbed the side of the board and guided down the back of the wave and went on my way, without so much as a murmur from anyone.

A bit later he waved at me to say sorry, and I just smiled and shrugged as if it meant nothing, because it did mean nothing.

If I'm out in really crappy surf like that, then I've got to expect that there are going to be a lot of learners out there with me and my assumption is that they do know the rules, but because they're so into just getting a wave, they have little concept of what may be happening around the periphery of them, because I was the same as them not so long ago. Put me on the wrong board and I'm still the same.

So far I've been lucky and on the extremely rare occasion that I've done it, I always been met with an "oops, didn't see you".

In my mind, it seems less rude than yelling or even hooting at someone. The times when I do need to make a noise to let them know I'm there, I often just clap about 3 times.

Does this all sound a strange way to do it? I would never contemplate it in decent surf, it's just too dangerous, better to bail or go straight.

I've done it a few times over the years, its always a learner because an average to good surfer will shoot down the line or has the brains not to go.

Nothing worse than seeing a nose of a board sticking out of the wave your on and its about to snack you on the melon.

Yep I have done it a few times at The Pass mainly, to save my board or myself getting wacked and because if they are dropping in on you in 1 foot surf 9 times out of 10 they are gonna fall off to

nup

but i have landed on someone sitting inside the line up...

as in, i am out the back and they have an imagineary line up of their own on the inside, in front of everyone.

i didnt mean to land him... as i paddled for the wave and then sat back as hard as i could but the wave kept pushing

was i wrong to have even paddled??? thought he might have moved

i am now out of the water with a screwed knee for at least a week as a result

what do you reckon?
