Been surfing most of my adult life, can get barrelled, do reo's cuttys etc, comfortable upto solid 6ft plus etc.

But at 48 ive suddenly got a hankering to learn how to nose ride? Live on the Sunshine coast in Qld so plenty of smallish dribble about with some long lines up DI way.

But never ridden a nose rider and only surfed a mal a few times in my life.

So where should i start volume, width and length wise??

Im 78 to 80 kg and 174 cm.

Would love a 2nd hand Mctavish as I have a signed pic of his and hear they hold there value.

Hi I cant noseride for sh-t but at your height and weight 9.6 x 3 plus x 23 plus, theres a saying the bigger/thicker/wider the board the easier to noseride.

No way. If you want to nose ride you need water over the board. It needs to sit down and be a part of the water. Bigger thicker wider is definitely not the way to noseride.

That's where you get it wrong mac.
But you already know that. Remember jonesys video

Ps im no expert either. This is opinions from good noseriders

King Macaha you don't make sense you can't noseride but you are telling Belldiver to go big thick etc so he can noseride why can't you as your boards are pretty boaty and Lacey you make sense

How could one forget that clip you must have it saved for fast reference.
Yes John is a awesome surfer I love his style and it works for him but 90% of folks will tell you a different story when LEARNING to noseride.Your mate Ben Mc,Dave and many others have told me so.

The guy is Not a learner surfer mac.
All you are doing is giving him the size of the boards you ride.
Yoy dont want to put the hard yards in mac. And thats fine.

Facts are you need water over the board. Your big vol boards aren't going to let that happen.

Sure its good for getting a long and learning to surf
Cheers

Volume doesn't matter, length and width aren't super important. More about technique, the board, and positioning on the wave.
Personally id go for something something 9ft plus, 22 3/4-23 wide and 2 3/4 - 3inches thick, soft rails and a wide tail. Something like a Tak model t

This is probably the best article I've ever seen on noseriding.

What he said

I tought myself to NR a few years back and its one of the trickiest but most rewarding things you can do in surfing...

Here's a cpl tips form my learning...

Learn to Cross step, it help maintain momentum and is smoother so therefore assists in engaging and holding the rail in the wave face.

You need steeper waves, not flat waves... The waves need enough energy to hold your rail and support your weight.

Learn to Cross step

Head to the nose at the critical section or as a critical section is building, not when the wave is flattening out or the tail will just pop out and you'll pearl. This is super hard as it goes against your natural instinct.

Learn to Cross step

Keep your head over your ass/pelvis, you cant be bent forward or leaning all over the place like you do on an SB. You need relaxed upper body and good balance... Keep your head over your ass

Lastly, what I tend to do is try and bottom turn or check turn and bury the tail hard, almost shoving the rail into the wave face, angle the board slightly up the wave and head to the nose with your weight more on the wave side of the board. I actually find NR easier on the back hand as the wights on your heels...

Mostly though, be prepared to fall off a lot and just go for it... If you can master it its incredibly fun.
