I visit Queensland regularly. Coming this summer. I want to purchase a board that will get me waves and is suitable for the waves on offer. My tendency is towards fishy things or midlengths like these:

www.thesurfboardwarehouse.com.au/snub-nose-eco-tech-funboard/

Or

www.thesurfboardwarehouse.com.au/amazing-grace-funboard/

I love my Fountain of Youth and had a ball in 2014 on the Goldie. I am attracted to these two boards because of their versailty. Small to solid waves are doable. I sometimes think an 8' midlength with a nice pulled in tail would get me out in most conditions too.

But I suspect I should bite the bullet and get a longboard, if not a complete log. My last experience of the Sunshine Coast in Summer was being horribly jealous of a bloke on an 11' board while I was on a fish. I got waves. He got them easier. I did a few turns. He did more. I rode a fair way. He was going double the distance.

So, brains trust, should I look at a 7' midlength, 8' midlength, 9' performance longboard, or just get the biggest, cheapest log thing I can find.

Price will be an issue as I plan on leaving it Queensland and don't want to spend a motza on a board I see for 2-3 weeks once a year.

2 step plan

1. Bring over one of your boards that you don't use to often that likes the big stuff for when a cyclone swell hits and you are in the area

2. Buy one of Mac's old (really new ) boards and live happily ever after I reckon.

Mac has one for sale that has not even been finished. Artwork doubts are creeping into his mind due to lack of love and people mocking

There are a few options mate - there's SDR , Firewire , Mt Woodgee in one suburb alone , quite a few other resellers around .... then you could take a drive to Byron & suss out a few more down there too

Those surfboard warehouse numbers are about $500. If price is the driving factor maybe wait until early jan and buy someone's unwanted Christmas present for a fraction of the RRP on gumtree. I haven't ridden any of the surfboard warehouse boards so can't comment on the links in your question. The fountain of youth shape is very similar to the Takayama Scorpion or McTavish Sumo (both of which are supposed to perform well)

Cheers.

And to everyone else. My FoY is a top board, but I was more after a recommendation for a style of board for summer waves in QLd. If I could only have one board, what should I be looking at?

Got dropping in by two guys on Saturday all was good until the outside guy forgot we were behind and forced a 3 way cut back which ended with paint swapping. Some rubbing with metho fixed it.

I am a bit biased but my "go to board" is my 8' 3" McCoy Big Guy Nugget. If I was travelling down the east coast and could only take one board that is the one I would take.

Not sure if there is a perfect board for SEQ - my old go to was a 9'1 log and surfed Noosa, Pt Cartwright, Straddie and the beaches down to Byron on that thing. Only had a touch of trouble at D'bah. You could easily do the same on any other board. Have just picked up a 7'4 egg and absolutely love it.

Geez Mac,I remember surfing up there about 30 years ago,It was bad enough then with crowds but at least you knew most of the blokes you were surfing with,It's out of control by the sounds of it these days

Fountain of Youth would be my pick too...although if you have time, the 2nd handy scene over there does seem pretty good too.

For similar money a Diverse General Manager from Sideways is worth a look.

$650 or thereabouts. diversesurf.com.au/board-models-2/retro-style/gm-general-manager/

Tuflite....
Surprisingly ok to surf and tough as...

Something like a Tak DT would be good about 9'6ish.

If your travelling a mid has more range but it's summer on the east coast. Going to be small windswell most of the time..

Anything tufflite would be the go if you're surfing in crowds. I had a Tak 7'6 egg a long time back and it was pretty good .

I would go to the surfboard warehouse and buy the cheapest ...if you intend surfing the points here you wont have to worry about freighting it home ...their will be nothing left worth keeping ....
