Hi Everyone! My name is Stacey and I'm happy to report I just brought home my very own surfboard. I went with a 9 foot green Greco soft-top (foam) board which I oh so love. I can't wait to hit the waves at Bolsa Chica in Huntington Beach, CA USA early tomorrow morning. I have a surfer lady I met who is meeting me there to give me a lesson and guide me w/the waves. What advice can you give me? What lingo do I need to know? Your advice is appreciated!

Simple advice;
Be honest to her that you a newbie, and she should guide you...

Also;
You have to paddle pretty much as hard as you can, when trying to catch a wave... It's actually better if someone can spend some time with you, lightly pushing you into some gentle soft rolling waves...

Surfing - it's harder than it looks...
Getting to your feet... Think like you are a cat... You need to stay well balanced when getting up...

Stacey the two best tips I can think of are paddle at an angle to the wave on your take off and what Simo said think like a cat, the single best thing you can do is practise your pop ups doesnt matter where you are popup, popup, popup

Stacey, I can't offer you a whole lot of advice, because I'm not much better than a noob myself, a very old nood at that, but your request did manage to draw out a very funny story from some people I was having lunch with today down at, Mongers at Manly (highly recommended if anyone wants a good seafood feed in Manly).

So there I was having a farewell lunch with a couple from Lake Forrest in CA, they've been in oz for about 12 weeks and they're heading home on Friday, they're called Bob & Barb, bob does not surf but I do know they lived at Huntinton Beach for many years and they still have friends there, so I showed them your post so they could explain to me where " Bolsa Chica " was. Then Bob tells me about the one and only time in his life that he ever tried to surf.

Just to give you a bit of background, Bob was born and raised in Michigan and as you're no doubt aware, there's plenty of snow around there and they do a bit of winter sports, so getting back to surfing, Bob was given the lend of a board and was given a block of wax to put on the board, Bob, no stranger to the use of wax on sporting equipment, does what any good skier would do with a block of wax, he turned the board over and gave the bottom of the board a good coat of was before venturing out for a paddle.

So I guess the only advice I could give you would be "wax goes on the top"

LOL great story mate, never heard of anyone doing that before. But yeah it makes sense if you come from that background

Stacey try & find waves that are crumbling down the face of the wave, not sucking over steeply or barreling. This will give you more time to get to your feet

lingo is not a prerequisite for surfing although if you get stuck ,...............I'm doing nothing tomorrow or for the rest of the week!

awesome Stace I can only offer this for you:-

1. Enjoy the hell out of it - be stoked
2. Stick very close to your friend & listen to her advice when you are out there
3. Keep trying never give up
4. Eventually make sure you read Surf Etiquette (google it ) this is very important
5. Learn to scream in delight ( yeah just like when you ....... well you know what I mean )

.... apart from that - when are you coming down to Australia ??????

Thank you all SO SO much! I wiped out hard! SO HARD the other surfers game me the nickname "HC" for Hard Charger. Despite me wiping out a bunch, I did get up once! And it was so exciting! The lady surfer I was with started clapping. I also saw a pod of 15 or so dolphins 10 feet from me! What a great experience! One of them was a baby. How incredible. I'm sore as hell today. Looking fwd. to the weekend already! YAY!

I was in Sydney & Melbourne this past November. Beautiful county. I had so much fun at Manly, Bondi, Camp Cove & Watson's Bay!!!
