I had the same problem, rode 9footers my whole life and was sick of getting nailed by the airlines when I traveled. Bought a mctavish sumo 6,10x 22x2&3/4, great board, paddles great, doesn't feel scitchish when I go to turn & really easy to surf. Had to go a bit longer as i'am a bit of a fatty 6'4 100kgs but works well for me. Cheers

so what size are you riding atm?

Still ride 9 footers all the time, I live in the nor west Western Australia at the moment and surf reef passes on all my 9 footers but love getting the sumo out if its a bit bigger and don't want to get rolled by the sets. Handles all wave sizes well as long as there is enough push to get me lumpy frame going. I grew up in noosa so coming over to west oz was a real eye opener as to boards for waves (size & power)

Looks like you we're very spoiled for choice, with all the board porn above, gots me wanting a new sled now,!!!!

Bloody hell a surf Q in a surf forum

welcome to the longroom

depends where your going to surf... Points... beachies

but have a look at the 7S range also go and have a chat with your local shaper he's the man that will help steer you into the right board.

From my end, I would say a sweet potato is right on! The kind of board that has plenty of volume so great for paddling nice and stable and throws around of the back foot really well! They go well in most surf too! I ride a 5'4 ECS Bulldog that is a similar shape (sorry to pimp here breezers ) and it is a cheaper alternative to the firewire, if you can afford the fire wire and you like them, by all means, go for it! Great boards and incredibly tough!

And as weiry says, have a chat to a local shaper or even email a shaper on something they will recommend!

Hope you find a board for a good change from a longboard!

Tom.

Tom..an ECS bulldog would be great...if there were ever any available. Have been trying to get one for the last 6 months and even put my name down for the Dec shipment but still missed out. Have given up!

They sell damn quick. Next lot is a while away from what I remember but I will let you know when they should be there. Go on ebay and save Ecs as a seller and then you should have the option to get email about new items in their ebay store. That's what I do with cameras and other things I want on ebay

As stated previously - if I lived near along right hand point break or two I would have. Alternatively if you want to donate me one I would be more than happy

Yeah thanks a lot everyone! I'd be surfing it on a point break around 2-3ft and occasionally at beacheis around 2 ft. Just wondering what size any of you guys would recomend as i want something stable and easy enough to paddle (im 81kg and probably around 5'11)

As a simple rule I firmly believe that volume is your friend - especially in waves like that and at your level. I would suggest you aim for something in the 35 to 40 litre range as an indication, that is flat with a wide nose as SP said. Perhaps a 6'0" POD or a 5'10 to 6'0 Potatnator or a 5'6 to 5'8 Baked potato or sweet potato. Lots of other great boards out there but I am not too up on the models. Just go for a low rocketed board with a widish nose and you probably can not go wrong.

If you find one you like post it for some quick feedback from the greenroom. Where in NSW are you? I will keep an eye out for you. Are you going new or second hand?

What Ted recommended is what I would have said too. They are great shapes, super fun fast boards! I have even considered going up sizes for the really small days, like 0.5ft so I can still stay on the waves but then again the mal does that job.

Good luck!

Hey guys,

Not sure if anyone will reply, but i was just wondering what some of you guys would recommend as a good relatively easy shortboard to drop down to from a longboard. Ridden longboards my whole life and just craving something for those better days.

Ive looked at the fire sweet potato (5'6-6'0?) and tak scorpions??

Any advice??

Cheers (btw im around 80kg and 5'10)

What's your thoughts now you've read and seen the suggestions?
Btw what's your budget?
It's fun theoretically spending other peoples money.

Sounds like a good choice.
There's a review of it on compareboards.com and the tester rides one over-sized for his stats.

I had a ride on a Joe when I was looking for a small wave crusher... Nice board,I think it will be great for what you want. Not as a small wave board, even though they go ok in them. More a board that will be great over a bunch of conditions, for a average Joe...enjoy
