So I sold my Sea gypsy to my mate. What to do with the money?
Stupid question. Buy another board of course. Took a while to get here as all but one of the surfboard couriers stopped except Chris from the central coast.
A knock on the door this morning and there it was. A rare beast too.
8' Sunova 8 ball. Super refined board. Rails that you'd find on a shortboard. Plenty of rocker too. Really light but with the look and feel of a quality board.
Came with a set of Asher Pacey twins and trailer. Since the waves were only thigh high I took the trailer fin out. Luckily it was clean and tide bottoming out. First couple of waves were left's and I set the rail but couldn't turn it at all as I was standing too far forward. Started grabbing my rail and riding the sucky parts of the wave with more success. Then I had time to scoot back as I stood up further along the wave to do some turns.
Forehand was a heap easier. Anyway had a lot of fun it. Mate came out and enjoyed his first surf on a 7'2" hotdogger. We discussed the numerous good points about riding midlength boards.
Reckon the board would go great with just a small quad set.

A couple more surfs on the board. The rails are "Ninja" rails. Not forgiving and you have to be on your game with weighting and un-weighting in turns. Tried Moonraker (Outer islands surfboards signature fins) quad fronts and gxq rears yesterday. Small waves again but the board felt too stiff. Today I ran it with just a set of Modii twins which free'd it right up. More base than the Asher Pacey twins but with less tip area than the Ashers. As soon as the waves have some push (which could be a while by the dismal forecast) I'll run it with a trailer in the centre thruster plugs. This board will light up when its juicey for sure. Burt Berger's penchant for making refined boards that work on surface area balanced with minimal volume are interesting to ride.

Sorry to come across that way, what you also don't seem to realise is that my field of specialty is hydrodynamic engineering, CAD modelling and fluid dynamics. So it's not a great leap to apply those fundamentals in a rational and logical way to various shapes and designs.

Was not trying to come across as the dickhead you see me as and apologies to any and all for that offence. Just trying to share my thoughts and to learn based on my experience and knowledge, that did involve sometimes calling people on their claims based on supposed reputation without any validation or proofs.

Will try harder to be less prickly to you and SP in the future, but will still say what I think and debate accordingly.

I've got a 6'8"-6'10" on order from a young, predominantly shortboard shaper . I think you just nailed me to a tee.

Does having a 7'2"-7'6" on order from a shaper with grey hair save my lack of talent, Youth and fitness from being sadly pathetic?

(the shortboard has no specific length as I told him to fit in certain design things but left the rest up to him. The mid-length has no specific length because he is awaiting blanks so I haven't locked in a length yet)

The Sunova won't overtake the new 7'6" I run with the big flex twins for small wave fun no matter what fins I put in it. The tail area is the big difference there.
There's some tasty looking Hanalei (or however you spell it) fins on eBay that I saw.

The front fins have less area than the rears and then they have the parabolic trailing edge in the rear fins as well.
