Great thread but lacking images of mid length boards, post them up to educate me.
Maybe we need a clear definition of what represents a midlength?
For me:
Length between 6'4 and 8'6 but it's function in that range of sizing can be vast and varied. I've heard it said that a mid length or to be classified a mid length the board needs to be at least one foot taller than the rider, and able to perform more than one purpose or function (so basically not just a gun).
I like a board that can be ridden old school and with style (not that I've got that), so some walking, nose riding, some drop knee cut backs, trimming and gliding through fat sections, early wave entry, etc.
And at the same time allows you to tap into near short board potential to throw it around a bit (not airs though, nothing against them, just not my thing). But to be able to pull a tighter arch than a longboard, to hit the lip harder and steeper, to slide the tail a bit etc.
It should not feel dull to inputs but responsive and agile with good rail to rail transition, as well as giving the ability to be ridden slow and stable if that's your thing.
And it should perform in anything from 1' slop through to double overhead with multiple fin options to mix and match to what you want to do on the day.
See, an easy board to make
But seriously, I know I banged on about the Cjet but it was as close to that as I could get at the time for my budget. Now having the Webber which was my dream list board I can tell you that it is fairly close to the mark on all of the things I have listed above. Greg put a lot of thought and design knowledge into that beastie including the fin types, placement and flex patterns that would suit it best.
After my last ride on the Webber I would rate it a solid 8.5-9 / 10 on that wish list of what makes a mid length for me. I doubt very much that I will find a board that suits me better overall.
The Cjet I would rate a 7 / 10.
I'm sure that others will have different wish lists and performance objectives for a mid length.
