So I got some waves this morning at secrets.
Nose dived on just about everyone of them.
Shallow rocker and broad nose are gonna take some getting used to.
One the couple of waves I did manage to pull into the board felt good. Not as responsive as they make out in their adds, but that could be a case of me not being Beau Young and the fin setup and placement.
Got so.e tinkering to do and some fine tuning. Still it got my wave count up dramatically which was my primary objective.
A few more surfs and hopefully I can tune into this board better.
I had a beau wombat. Too me a while to fin up. I used large sides with small quad rears
Cheers mate, that's why I went with the Carbon Jet. Everyone raved about the Wombat which the CJ was pulled from. Have only run the 2+1 in it which given the length made it fairly stiff. The couple of runs I did get across the face it had good speed but I never got to put it onto the rail properly to get a real feel. But that's Secret harbour closeouts for you, a very quick break that's over in seconds.
Will likely head down to Avalon on the weekend to get a bit more time on the face and will mix and match fin combo's then.
Noticed Webber Diamond runs big twins with a novel shaped rear biter that has a lot less surface than the 2+1 setup. Might look around for a small rear and give that a crack as well.
On the quad I've got some 5" and 4" that came with the board, what did your rears come in at?
Again Cheers.
A large front fin.
And almost stabilizers size side fins
Found it awesome in uneven chunky waves
About time the fin guru came alive again
Thinking I'm gonna get some of these
webbersurfboards.com/fins/Then use a box to FCS adaptor for the nubster style trailing fin.
But that wont fix another issue that i'm starting to realise, rocker. I bought this board for paddle speed, and yes it paddles well and is reasonably quick to lift and go.
Problem is that I am not riding full and mushy style waves like they show in the videos. I'm on a bank that pitches up a steep face very quickly, and as such I am eating the bank more than hooking into a bottom turn.
Might be a bit of weight distribution issue still but anytime I'm more than 60 deg to the face the nose dives. It's almost like slow motion, I can see what is going to happen even before it does and then she goes shovel nose on me.
I did a side view layout of the rocker for the Carbon Jet against the Modern Love child, Snub Nose Eco Tech, and even some of the shorter longboards, all seem to have quite shallow rockers.
I then overlaid the SubX and the Webber Diamond 6'10" and noticed that both of these have some extra lift in the nose due to a seemless rocker transition over the length of the board. Not a great deal more but somewhere between 15 to 20mm, which at the end of the day may not make a big difference?
What I also think is not helping is my ambition is outweighing my ability, my brain remembers what I could do many years ago, but my body and muscle memory is kaput. Yeah I still have the basic dynamics right but have lost that edge I once had.
Anyway perseverance is key, fitness will come back, and hopefully I can stop nose diving.
Also hoping that using the quad setup will allow me to swing the board around parallel to the wave face a bit quicker and easier during drop in. If I can get the rail engaged early enough then I'm all good, and to do this I need to either catch the wave early enough, or to be able to swing the nose around quick enough.
