I haven't measured mine but I am not sure Mal's bonzers principles are applicable..... He has been refining his bonzers for nearly 50 years!

I can get a bonzer feel on my Lizzy with the set up & tri plane hull bottom but it isn't the full bonzer experience.

My understanding from listening to Dave Parmenter was that he loves singles... But he found when it got steep and critical that they could blow out in critical parts of the wave, that was where he came up with the widowmaker design so the side fins would add stability and hold when you put her on rail. And for sure, I found when I used to surf "thrusters" you could just about turn anywhere Vs the single fin you have to be more considered, more with the wave...

I'm not after the "Bonzer experience" with this board... I mean, if I was then i'd just buy an actual Bonzer... I just need some extra loving when she gets critical... I guess plan b is getting a fin thats a bit stiffer and longer for when it get more critical?

Cheers for the input and help though, its kinda new ground for me coming off nothing but singles or twins for so long... Anyways, Friday arvo looks the goods but I think i'll take the fin box screw driver and the the flat head so I can make some on the beach adjustments.

Well use standard side fins instead of bonzer ones lol

I got this Soar 2 + 1 setup for my cruiser and they have these beautiful little side bites.

I think Surfblanks sell little sides as well. Some people really like them if you are looking for something a bit different but don't want to go the whole hog sort of thing.

It's all personal preference I think.

The centre is 7.75 with small sides.

The Soar fins are really well made and beautiful.

I would highly recommend.

I Know Parmenter with the Widowmaker are a more traditional fin type, small upright fins.

However... the fins I have been supplied are Bonzer side fins so they sit angled out... Anyways, these are what Ryan and Trevor found worked through a bunch of experimentation so I'm happy to go with the shapers recommendation... And I'm trying to not buy stuff, trying to be less of a consumer, so i'm not going to go buying a bunch of different fins , i'll just make what I have work...

This clip is pretty interesting though, Yes its CA and my ability is at the opposite end of the spectrum but he's running a pretty short single in solid barreling waves and positioned right, well, it surfs beautifully...

So maybe the better solution is to sell the Bonzer sides and buy a stiffer and slightly more volume single fin... after a little experimentation first of course.

Surfed the 7'7" on the rip bowl today... Pretty fun again... But took the Bonzers out, I need to adjust them as they don't quite fit flush with the board in the box... And I still doubt that I need them.. Anyways... Need to experiment still so...

They overcharge more... Generally the foam manufacturer inserts the extra stringers when they make the blank, the extra amount they charge is pretty minimal... I think when I was looking from single to double stringer on a 7'4" blank it was $30...

30 bucks thats cheap mate.

My take is that the blank manufacturer is doubling the cutting and glue up process and then the shaper has to plane the extra stringer.

It cost me 150 in total from the board maker unaware of the split between blank manufacture and board maker.

But what I am saying is there is very little difference in the cost of the actual blanks themselves...

example,
Dion foam 7'3" custom rocker single stringer blank = $120
Dion foam 7'3" custom rocker "double" stringer blank = $150

And actually, the reason for the double stringer is that it will save time inserting the fin box as you just router out the foam and dont have to cut into the stringer.

A quick question, always rode shortboard/hybride.

Can't see it being that much easier or quicker to rout foam instead and foam and timber for an experienced shaper? How much time you reckon it would save them? Must be a bit if they are paying and extra $30 per blank.

A look more than anything i reckon.
When your looking at hi tec boards with flex being a new a technical area, putting in treble Stringer must absolutely kill a board .
Mind you if your just standing in the middle of the board it wouldn't matter i suppose
