I think I've only not surfed about 4 days in the last 3 weeks & there have been plenty of others doing the same. There are more people walking around, riding & hanging down the beach than spring/summer. Is it to our detriment? No, quite the opposite.

I'm not saying precautions should not be taken to avoid the virus. I'm saying a lot of the restrictions are over the top. I feel sorry for you guys...& peoples response has surprised me. Its disappointing to see people forgo their freedoms so easily. Some appear to be almost celebrating it.

Where do I continually back the government. I said they did a good job imo. There's a lot I don't agree with.

They locked it down and got ahead of it. Lots of things I don't agree with but in this case they have in my opinon done a pretty fair job with controlling the spread amd managing cases vs health care services available.

I don't think our lock down measures are any more strict than the rest ofthe country. We can still surf, go out just need to keep your distance and stay local. What measures do you mean?
In reality it doesn't affect me really besides my kids. I still go to work everyday, surf when I want just can't take my kids to swimming or the park.

Fair enough if people are getting in trouble for doing something stupid like having a party but a lot of people are being fined for activities that put no one at risk. I havn't heard any stories coming out of Qld about people getting unreasonable fines, only Vic/NSW. Maybe because there's more media people in those states.

I'm happy to hear you feel your life has not been too adversely effected by all this. Thats good, I hope it stays that way. Just wish more people could say the same.

I remember the GFC having a big impact on global airline flights. We paid 2k more for flights to EU, could end up the same or will it only impact on Aus flights.

Whole family out of work. Wife's and daughters cafe shut since March. All staff let go. Tourist town so takeaway was not a viable option. Lease is up next week so moving out. My food business and my other daughter's and her boyfriends were all shut down in March. Don't know when we will re-open, if at all. Rental house is up to date until today but am trying to find somewhere cheaper to live as our lease is up and the rent is going up. Our landlord flatly refused to give any cheaper rent despite a proposal I sent to the real estate a month ago. Been moving household stuff to my parents garage. Survived by selling stuff on Gumtree. Cafe and food business gear. Just got some Govt money on Monday and wife this morning. Several times hanging at Centrelink to achieve this. 2 daughters and boyfriend still have nothing. We take them groceries and food. Boyfriend's mum giving them money for rent.

Being OK with the restrictions doesn't mean we aren't affected it just means we are managing.

People losing employment sucks.
That is why it's important to do all we can to hopefully get back to some normalcy as quick as possible.
The gov can't keep writing cheques and business won't recover if it goes on for a long time and we will have ongoing social issues, like people becoming long term unemployed or losing houses etc.

Hope thing improve for you CF. No one wants to see anyone in that situation.

My best mate is a senior accountant, 60 years old, has been put on to a 5 day fortnight.
He can use annual leave or leave without pay, or long service leave for every second day.
He can't afford to use leave without pay, is going to run out of annual leave shortly.
He can see himself at the end of this having no money, no leave, half his super gone and no time for it to recover, and potentially no job.
He is not in a happy place at the moment.

I'm in a similar situation, but not renting however not able to pay the mtg. Business has gone belly up from clients not paying big contract invoices to $250k, and in this climate not much chance of recovering the cash. Downward spiral with the in laws not honoring a property agreement, loss of $425k right there. And now the Carona virus to top it all off and put the final nail in the coffin.

I'm a fighter, but this series of events has beaten me down so bad, Carona has the potential to take even more from us with my wife being in a very high risk category due to health complications.

I feel for you and yours and all others out there doing it tough, the silver lining in all of this is that we live in a nation that has a security net for the disadvantage. Whether people agree with how that is implemented or not is neither here nor there to me at the moment, the very fact that we are able to access some form of income to put food on the table is the point.

Hope things pick up at your end and for others also, gonna be a long hard slog out of this mess.

Yeah those jingles and one liners are starting to piss me off.

"We've got this", "All in this together" load of crap.

Some of us are in this deeper than others and I don't see the smiling faces offering to pay my way.

All I see is celeb's pontificating their affluence and creativity showing us how to cook at home with ingredients we can't afford.

Meanwhile what little I have left I am using to buy food and supplies for neighbors and family that are in a worse state than we are. Family over the road lost their son to suicide a couple of weeks before all this crap hit the fan, he's a chef and as you can guess no work, the have 3 little ones and a lot of dysfunction to deal with as you can imagine. Us giving up a box of food every week is not a lot but makes a world of difference to them.

So many more that I know of who are in just as great a need, all in this land of plenty. Seems we are all needing to do some adjusting on what now constitutes essentials.

Yes

I think we should be isolating the old & people with diminished immunity systems so less people are effected.

Hopefully they lessen restrictions soon so people can get back to work. They could do this according to each areas health data.

Sorry to hear about you guys having a tough time. I hope Huey serves you an extra share of epic waves.

Wifey won't be back to work for a long time. She has one lung completely destroyed from TB when she was a child and her other lung is not good. Nebuliser and symbicort inhaler twice a day to help her cough up the phlegm from the permanent pseudomonas infection that lives in her remaining lung. Takes an antibiotic daily to fend off more infection. The enforced break has been good for her health apart from the financial stress as she's a go getter coming from a dirt poor background. We've already lived through the SARS, Avian flu and other outbreaks while living in Thailand so we are used to the ever present consequences of infection and are as careful as we can be. Almost lost her to pneumonia once.
I was getting nervous yesterday while sitting in Centrelink with people coughing in front of me and behind me. I think the woman behind me had a smokers cough but I was really suss on the Asian lady with a mask on.

Agree 1000%. Everything is not fine. The only thing we have got is a ****ed up situation to deal with. Some worse than others. As you said a bit of empathy and thinking about those that are really coping it goes a long way.
