Hi all, been lurking around the forums for a while now, filter feeding on bits and pieces of info you have all parted with over the months and years of posting.
Questions first (you may get bored with the monologue beneath)
Looking at a couple of Aussie shapers and wondering if any of you have experience or recommendations with their longboards?
-Thomas Surfboards - really like the look of the jai lee model
-Sean Nettleton (Vane surfboards) There was a 9'8 log locally on ebay a few weeks ago that looked pretty amazing for $900, the price was a little to high for me for a 2nd hander.
-Any other recommend local Vicco shapers?
A bit about me:
I was a relative late comer to surfing, getting my first board at 18 after I finished school and got a job.
Lived in and traveled from NZ my entire life until I move to Melbourne 2 years ago. Love longboarding and really miss my McTavish which is back in NZ, so I am keen to get another LB in the quiver.
Boards I've owned over the years:
2004 - 9'1 'The Board' shaped by Ray Finlay in Rags,NZ (got stolen).
2005 - 7'6 Jordan shaped Andy Jordan, Tga NZ (still ride and love it)
2007 - 9'2 Highvoltage shaped by Mike Murden, Tga, NZ (traded)
2008 - 9'1 Southpoint, bonga, shaped in China and was a cork (snapped)
2010 - late 90's 9'2 McTavish, Ray Gleave, shaped by Bob McTavish (do any of you guys know the brand, can't say I have seen them mentioned anywhere on these boards............?
)
2013 - 6'2 Lost V2 rocket (brought in the states, what a rubbish glassing job brittle as f***)
Thanks guys hope to get hear from you soon.
Dave

except mac. he doesn't talk to anyone unless they've had at least 50 boards. he's a bit of a snob that way![]()

Hahaha oh dear I'm tasting rejection all over again, just like the last forum I joined, my stereo wasn't expensive enough and I didn't have enough records in the collection to be a music lover. Thanks for the heads up Lacey, I'll try not to get my heartbroken ![]()
Towball Last time I was visiting the parentals in Tauranga, I saw Mike out patrolling mount main as usual. The Finlay board was amazing, thin, narrow, pulled in pin tail, a real rocket. Not an easy board to learn on but man it was fun and fast. Would still have it, if not for some thieving lowlife scum.
How is the Electraglide? I've looked into them, but it's never gone much beyond a brief once over.
Edit: Cheers Mac, I'm feeling much more accepted, I'll work on the 44 remaining boards, so you feel a little more at ease with me.
More the merrier welcome aboard Dave, boy those other guys are so rude at times![]()
I've been boxed I can only help with all things mct![]()
Would be wrong of me not to suggest talking to Mr del Rosso, boards can be freighted anywhere around the country for less than 100 bucks. ![]()

Sean makes.beautiful boards....I would definitely be buying one from him...I know Thomas makes super nice boards as well, but I think there might be a 2 month wait, and they way overpriced imo(bloody hipsters forcing up the prices)
for a board that would last close enough to.forever and is from vicco is Josh Dowling shapes, absolutely the most delicious looking boards I have seen...
..but for the most function longboard would definitely be sdr![]()
-We kiwi's wear all our 4th placings proudly & without shame haha, 4th is really so close to 1st there isn't much to quibble over. Hanging in sport and having the occasional win is what we do best (the exception to the rule is of course Rugby)
-Yea I agree with you on the the Thomas boards Chrispy, beautiful board, $1850 is just too damned expensive. Can we blame the hipsters for this, they seem to get the blame for everything these days, I guess its an easy way out.
Those Dowling shorties are amazing.
-Vanders I will look into Rosso Boards haven't heard of them. A hundy squid isn't a deal breaker at all.
- One Question I have about my McT board Mac. How are boards shaped by Bob himself signed? I figure mine is made by an employee of the Brand rather than by Bob as its only got "By McTavish" signed, rather than By 'Bob McTavish' or some other variant of his initial.
Cheers for the help so far peeps, my search spectrum has broadened by about 100% thus far.
Longboard Shaper in Vicco = Greg Brown in Torquay.
Welcome to the boards mate.
Just don't spend to much time in here, and not much in the water. As most of us do at some time or another.![]()
