I know it's been talked about before, but here goes.
I'm from Perth and at Cottesloe is a break called Isolated (Isolators or ISO's)
This has become hipster party wave central and a lot of not very good surfers seeking that authentic retro experience of no legrope. I don't care about whether these people hurt themselves or wreck their authentic boards but have some regard for other people (go Byron Bay council).

Anyway, called out a young guy, hipster as all fxxx. Said you must be the best surfer in the world. "What?"
You're not wearing a legrope, wear alegrope.

Well like all of us, he didn't enjoy being called out. What followed was a tirade of "you wanna have a go, come out here and I'll take all your waves and you fat old bastard (like this is news to me, except for my parentage).

Should we call out these people or just "mind our own business".

By the way spoke to a lot of older surfers about this and all agree, use a legrope.

Old saying " You can't put brains in sheep "
Unless you're a 120kg macho just stay out of their way and if a loose board comes your way then vent your anger..imo.

About 2 score ago was the last time is surfed iso it is a lovely shaped wave for Malibu riding.
There is simply too many humans who surf there now.
they are like a rash
like seagulls on a chip or flys in a poo.

wear a leash., if I'm surfing and particularly if there is grommets around I will say something.

I will say something if you snake , I will say something if you drop in, I will say something if you don't have a leash and we are surfing Perth with 20 people out and another 10 grommets ( grommets are not human however we still don't want a stray 8 foot board hitting them)

I don't normally surf on weekends, and I do not drop in on people.....

last saturday whilst surfing trigg ( not bad around head height)

I paddled out and sat away from the pack a bit as I was riding a 9,4 mal.
a set came through I took off bottom turned and ducked in, a young man on a shortboard dropped in deliberately,,,, now saying young he was likely 30-35 I'm like just under 40

Anyway I made it around the section he crumbled and we found ourselves on the inside half a metre away from each other.

I said to him didn't you see me???

He said and i quote" you weren't going to make it"


I replied well I did even after you crushed the lip and dropped in ,,,, he said **** you longboarding ****......

( ten years ago at this point I would of choked him out)

however in the interest of returning the favour i said I said nothing further and smiled and paddled back out.....

Around 5-10 minutes later a set appeared, this guy was in pole position and it was a screamer, I was a metre away towards the shoulder,,,, I turned ,,, made eye contact smiled and dropped in,,,, he straightened out I got tubed and came out...

It was the first deliberate drop in I have done in several years and it felt good,,, I was high on it..

It was the wrong thing to do however I didn't care, I was out for blood and willing to drop all decorum......

The people who ride boards without leashes need to be cautious as it's all good to lip off but I reckon over 50% of people I surf with will have a similar response that I do when I get dropped in on as being hit by a stray board.

When I was a kid I seen someone get their fin kicked out for not wearing a leash when their board decimated the line up....

Seems to me that the no leggie , to cool, look at me flogger crew is increasing , well at Noosa anyways. Surfed 1ft granite 2 days ago , with leggie , and upon walking past TT i reckon 50 % of longboarders were void of a legrope. Chicks , old dudes, young dudes, young kids seems like everyone's doing it. Upon the walk past out and back saw 3 boards loose in the line up. Am I missing something ? Surley there's a couple of no leggie crew in here, pls explain
Me mate did spray 1 unlucky soul archer without a leggie, and he vacated granite and paddled promptly back to TT.
Maybe we need the no leggy , no surf rule , on the council surf rules signs at busy beaches. Or do we have this already

My view point is, its not a legal requirement so everyone should drop it until it is. and please dont believe the hype of the advertising a recent law firm did with regards to a legrope, that was the best free advertising i have ever seen because everyone shared the crap out of it.

I mean your verbal confrontation is, by law, abuse these days, so someone not wearing a legrope could ask where is your muzzle? they both have the same credit in the grand scheme of the topic

It might not be illegal but it's also not decent or moral - legal principles. Fortunately, most surfers are fair minded, abide by surfing etiquette and call out bad behavior - I've often seen surfers not involved in a drop in give the deliberate offender a spray. Self regulation seems to work in most cases. Hopefully, we never reach the point of needing formal regulations.

Na mate , no verballing by me, I was 2 busy pissing my self with laughter at watching my eldest and my mate scrambling out of the way of a tumbleweeding 10 fter.

I have had ATLEAST 10 injuries from surfers who were wearing legropes who bailed thier boards like kooks infront of me or couldnt make a drop despite missiling themselves into the channel where others are paddling out. i've had stitches on my eyelids from kooks with legropes on and this stuff happens all the time but noone talks about it. just wannabe hero's like you complaining about guys without a leash whether it affects you or not.

so how about you think of this then, should all nippers put legrops on thier boards, or lifesavers rescue boards, or clubbie kayaks???

I've been surfing for over 50 years and a competent imo, but always wear a leash as I'm not Joel Tudor.

Many years ago in Noosa my daughter got hit while paddling out by a hipsters board who wasn't using a legrope.
Second day of our holiday and she had to spend two days in hospital with a lot of damage to her ear.I was in the water at the time the prick didn't check on her wellbeing or offer a apology. I lost my **** at this cock. So ,Mick I have a right to mouth OFF right?

I've surfed with many a wsl world tour surfer and seen all come unstuck so it has FA to do with ones ability.
Yes I get it noseriding is a pain while using a legrope but if its crowded I believe for the safety of other water users you should wear one.

Was surprised when I got my OC1, it has a leash point. I wear a short leg rope that I think is designed for ocean skis.
I'm more concerned with staying in touch with the boat when I stuff up in the surf.

Not everyone is as good a surfer as you obviously are. That is the point when it gets crowded, which since this isn't the 70 s is all the time.

By the way, if someone lives further from the coast than you obviously do, they are still allowed to surf and have an opinion.

Ok I prefer to surf no legrope but however due to the population surfing I do mainly due to duty of care of people who have no idea where to position them selves when someone is on a wave and heading towards them. But I must admit if someone looses their board I will help the board towards rocks or beach ??

Wow! Interesting responses. I let them do what they like, but if a loose board hits me, I will stomp on it till it breaks. Simple.

There's a time & a place for not wearing a legrope. I don't wear one when riding a longboard or 666 in lonely tiny waves like I did this morning. mMM not that you could even call them waves. More like barely breaking bumps really haha. But I don't do it coz of perceived loss of maneuverability LOL, thats farking hilarious in regard to longboards & 666's. I do it coz of drag & I'm pretty much the only one out surfing out the back of a reef with an inside lagoon of still water that won't carry my board inside & endanger the swimmers.

Really pisses me off when I see guys like Alex knost surfing crowded Canguu with people frollicking around on the inside with their backs to the ocean. Doesn't matter how good you think you are, even the worlds best lose their boards & its just plain selfish to put other people in danger. Every time I post on youtube about the leashless w@nker his coksucking fanboys jump to his defence. Its hipster f@gs like him that have caused the problem...
