You know, one that you're embarrassed to tell your mates about?

The first board I learnt to surf on was a BIC 9'4" x something so wide it has a SUP handle x super thick. I love 'borrowing' that board when I take someone who's even more of a beginner than I for a surf. The thing could catch a ripple from a fart bubble - but turning it is another matter altogether.

I upgraded from that to a used 10'2" NSP, the older style with only a single fin. That's my real 'moped' board. I will take that one out by choice at times (whereas I only ever 'borrow' ye olde BIC when someone else is using it). After adding to the quiver a few times, and buying different fins for said additional quiver items, I ended up with a Shapers 10.25" Gatto fin that I didn't like in the board I originally bought it for... Once that fin went in the NSP, it was a whole new ball game. I had played with different fins in the NSP, but nothing woke it up like the Gatto fin.
On the really small days, I love taking that board out. I've ridden it so much over the past few years, that I really couldn't give a crap what the board snobs think of it... which probably means that it's not really a 'moped' board (see how I keep avoiding calling it a 'fat chick' board, as that would be entirely inappropriate).
Anyway, love that NSP despite what anyone else may think of it. The top coating was coming off all down the rails, so I stuck SUP rail tape to it, it looks even ****tier... Adds to the ambience of the board!

So, what's your 'moped' board... You know, the one that your kinda embarrassed about, at least around board snobs, but you still look forward to any opportunity to take it for a spin?

Cheers!

LOL awesome thread starter mate

I havn't had a longboard "moped". I come from a shortboard background & still ride shortboards probably 60% of the time provided we have a good year.

But!...I bought a Sunover SUP 10'6 x about 4.5 x about 1 million billion. Idea was to get the missus out for some tandem surfing. She enjoyed flatwater, but got upset with me pushing her to come out in 1/4 foot conditions. Combination of not liking waves & distance from shore, although she'd be fine snorkling k's offshore minus the waves. So anyway that board was my moped, it was so wide & so slow to turn I started switch footing just to keep it interesting. Sold it after a couple of years for a Starboard 8'10 x 32 x something which also has the training wheels width, so is also basically a moped also. Funny thing now is, I feel weird not surfing SUP switchfoot, I find it so much easier paddling into waves facing the wave goofy (locals a left) & have been riding Sups goofy for about 4 years now.

I've had 4 longboards, 1st a custom King surfboard made by a bloke in Albany, performance shape that I traded for a CW Whalebone performance shape still going strong after rolling with some heavy punches. A Modern 10" "retro" almost on training wheels, but great log for tiny conditions & now my main boards a Tolhurst Tuflight which is farking awesome, really low rails & thin Hyper performace LB.

Then again I guess this old 6'4 x 2.75 x 22.75 has training wheels in the right conditions, but no rocker makes it tricky in non fat waves.

Sometimes its all about the right board for the day & I really regret selling the modern retro. Would of been very handy over the last 5 months of substandard swell frequency. More glide than just about anything...cheers

Nothing wrong with mopeds supposedly all boards were or are things of beauty once in their life.
i would rather walk down a beach with a board under my wing that worked,,
but I never gave a **** what others thought.
this vid is why I don't like to blame the board/moped.

Yep it's a boogie board and it has been great addition to the quiver

No longer afraid to surf at my local with it
