Bill McLean

Position: Head Laminator
Industry Experience: 40
Years Surfing: 43

Billy McLean started out glassing at Nirvana surfboards in Avoca in 1969, having been taught by industry veteran Alf Jefferies. After taking a surf trip to Noosa in 1970 Bill fell in love with the north NSW coast and moved to Byron Bay, starting out at San Juan. Bill first met Bob McTavish at San Juan in 1972, when Bob was working there as a shaper, and they've been good mates ever since. Billy left San Juan in '73 and went to work for Warren Cornish, glassing boards for Mark Richards and Michael Peterson, before taking a break from the industry in 1982. Bill returned to Warren's factory in '93 following a revival in tinted laminations. Bills laminations are regarded as the finest quality tint-work worldwide.

The pig shaped Involvement model interests me.

I recon 10' x 24" may be good enough to keep me up front for a second or two.

I'm just a bit reluctant to ever own another PU board again after having so many of them either break, ding, look bad after a very short time, be difficult to pick up waves on or simply not perform.

My preference would still be the 9'6" ITP tuffy but second hand jobbies are like rock'n horse poop.

Well McT laminations are pretty good! You still need to be a little bit careful with them. This one looks good, and it will be getting packed up today and then freight to me in Torquay!

Board deleted... See other log thread for photo.

Have a chat to the guys at McT. I think 9'8 x 23"3/4 would be enough. If you were keen on 10x24 that would be cool too. But you could consider a Noosa 66 too.

If you wait 2 weeks, I can let you know how my 9'4 x 23'3/4 Involvement goes. Mine seems to have a leggie loop and glass on 11 inch Greenough fin. Should look more authentic than leggie plug and fin box.

Don't worry, I can certainly wait.

I would be extremely interested in knowing what you think of that involvement.
