Hey hey breeeeeezerzzzz,

We've had to delay the euro trip till next year due to a massive inc in cost of airfares and so we're going to hit Bali for a quickie...

So, any tips on spots, access to boards, accommodation etc would be super helpful...
Roughly, were looking at a week in Sanur, a week in Lombok, a week in Nusa Lembongan... and baring in mind, its a family trip where if i can score 3-4 surfs in 3 weeks i'll be stoked...

Thanx guyzzzzzzz

The name Mac can't think of is Batu Bolong (AKA, Old Man's).

Sanur is the place to stay in the wet season when the wind is Westerly. Dry season not the go coz of SE trade winds (onshore).

We've got 2 weeks booked in for September staying at Ramada Bintang Next to my favourite restraunt, "Pantai" between Jalan Segara & the beach. Best seafood curry in Bali.
www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g297697-d307567-Reviews-Bintang_Bali_Resort-Kuta_Kuta_District_Bali.html

We usually stay at The Green Garden on Jalan Segara in the wet season but unfortunately its shut down for reno (not to be mistaken for Green Garden on Jalan Kartika. Same owner diff hotel, he also owns Febri's pretty much over the road from there).

I like hotels between the airport (Tuban) & The Dicovery Mall. Its walking distance to jump on a boat out to the reefs or surf Kuta beachie (going off yesterday). Its a simple walk or bike ride along a beach path to Discovery mall, a little further to Kuta madness with all the little shops. Gets a bit hot after 1030, you can jump in a taxi to get you to Discovery for no more than $1, then walk to the edge of Poppies 1 & Poppies 2 area that will cover all the stuff they're selling between Tuban & Seminyak. Makes it easy for you to go for a surf & allow the family to easily go shopping & look around. Waterbom is also close by, over the road from discovery. Traffic is not as busy & its quieter.

Havn't been to Lombok, I was going to go in September. Bought a new 6'2 to comply with crapstars length restriction. But opted to go to Bali in the end coz I reckon its better overall value.

Nusa Lembonga. Great place but I'd recommend less than a week. Maybe 3 or 4 days. I think the family would get bored. Great surfing/snorkling but not much else apart from eating/drinking. I was there for one of the biggest swells of the year 2 years ago. But there is no waves at all at low tide. Everyones waiting for the tide to come up & bang crowds & hot locals that have it wired unless you hit Cerigan, but its not a LB wave. Also a small resort there now at Cerigan which could of made it crowded. Worth a visit though, was fun going for a moped ride around the island & great snorkling. You can easily cover the place in 3 or 4 days imo.

Hey guyz, cheers for the advice...

Were looking at the first couple of weeks in September, so Sanur will be mostly onshore then???

Fortunately the wife is not into shopping and we really want to avoid the touristy/commercial bustle of Kuta, for us its about cultural vibe, great food and just chillin. we plan to head up to Ubud, do the mountain trek and maybe explore some of the north coast more away from the tourist buzzz

Anyone hit Medewi? surf this time of the year? It is a left so i might need to do some work on the back hand...

Nusa Lamb sounds like an out for surfing then, I dont do mad crowds...

Yes mate, Sanur will be onshore/cross-shore by mid morning every day. Other side will be offshore everyday from Seminyak South. North of Seminyak one the coast starts bending around to Canngu, up to Balian & Medewi. It will be cross-shore once the trade wind kicks in mid morning. Tuban area is much quieter than Kuta/Legian with lots of restaurants. I'll be there late Sept, early Oct.

Can't give you much more info on Northern spots other than wind, coz we like branching out from Tuban in the Dry Season & Sanur in the wet.

shipwrecks on nusa lombongan is a great wave,..i found the take off was shifty so it was easy to get waves even when it was crowded. was surprisingly actually one of the highlights of my 2 month indo adventure.

You will have a ball at Medewi. Its a bit fat at times but can really have its moments. I used to surf there a lot back in the 90's and you would often have it to yourself for days on end. I believe that is far from the case these these days The upside is that there are lots of nice places to stay now and food options. We would often have Canggu with just a couple others as well at that time. Not been to Nusa Lembongan for a long time now - crowds can be pretty bad there given the number of breaks. A really nice place though. In the off season its a good option as you can grab a boat up the other side. Had some great times on Lombok over the years as well. On average the spots are not as great as the other islands in terms of quality but thats just being picky really. There are some insane waves there without including DP in the mix - which is insane but gets very very busy when its on and it can be a good way to break your neck and test your lung capacity all on the same wave ! There are some other really nice spots on the Bukit which will be nice and offshore all day long - and you can stay with close proximity to the waves which means you might be able to slip out for a few more sessions than you have budgeted for. This is one of my fav places - a bit away from the crowds - the wave is not as perfect as others but its still a load of fun. Its a lovely beach and you can do some nice walks to other spots as well. Some really nice accom options as well. For me its my fav beach in Bali. Not my fav wave (as it tends to section and closeout at times) but a really great place to hang out. Will be back there on Aug 15 and can not wait.

^^ Yes Balangan is my favourite place on the Bukit also....the close out sections spread out the crowd & the beach warungs are awesome. Would be good under head height on a LB too. Main reason I like it is its a nice place for the missus also, although better on high tide, otherwise its hard for her to have a swim.

Thanks again guyz.

How's access to boards down there, in particular, a nice 9' + lb?

We're thinking book first cpl nights there and see how we go, any recommendations for accom?

these guys look like they have boards - not sure of the quality though

In terms of accom options it all depends on budget - massive range - check trip advisor

Cheers broo, I'd love to take the new 7' but I think with the baby stuff and trying to deal with a board as well would just be painful

I'm heading to Ujung Bocur in South Sumatra next Friday, flying from Hobart.

Looks good, not the Kuta style, and pretty cheap, about 30-45 a night pp with meals.

not really a longboard wave though...
