It's like playing the us masters at a pitch and putt. It misses a lot of the bits that make a surf comp interesting. We were told it was going to be progressive and high performance. It wasnt.
It's like when they ran the founders cup, even Brazil looked great after it..
I would love to surf it. It looks like heaps if fun. Just found the comp boring. Which may be a bit to do with the WSL scoring criteria rewarding safe surfing.
Jordy south's comment is. Intereting
jordysmith88@shanebeschenabsolutely. I think size equals depth in the barrel and honest my dad can get a barrel in the pool. A barrel in the ocean is highly rewarded because it's hard to predict and hard to come by. But the ranch is predictable and really not that exciting to the viewers after watching the 10th surfer go back into the barrel for another 10 seconds .. ?????? anyways my 2cents
As for the Olympics, nah. Never been a fan of it.
I actually enjoyed the pool event... yeah the format needs work but that wave is mesmerizing and I felt there was a lot of tension to get the scores... there were so many mistakes which shows those guys were under a ton of pressure...
I would add that yeah, it wasn't as good as as Jbay or Bells, Snapper, Ulu or Pipe but way better than the sh1tty european leg we are about to snore through... Yeah, the surfing was not as progressive as we were hoping but progression comes with practice. the pool is quite hard to surf from what I have read and heard and will take time to master but I think seeing whats to come is pretty bloody exciting...
I reckon pool surfing will end up like half pipe in snowboarding or supercross in biking, almost a separate sport with a different set of pro athletes and I think over the next 10 years we are going to see some super radical stuff...
And I think what it will do for the "pure" surfers is it will actually thin out the lineups. I think it will get those "weekend warriors" that rock up and drop in and snake as many waves as they can in an hour and then p1ss off, those dudes that are in it just to catch waves will head to the pool and get their fix leaving the ocean for those that truly immerse themselves in it, for those that surfing is about more than just catching waves.
