Hi there- I am looking at getting into a SUP. I used to surf years ago but want to get into this sport. Juat wandering what board size would suit a beginner 180cm 80kg, I am wanting to eventually put it in small surf. I have been looking at the Evoke range- they look great. Is there anywhere you can buy them near Brisbane QLD . Thank you
Hey Andy
This time of year is a great time to buy a good board. there's lots of demo stock being sold, so keep an open mind.
With some boards, you get what you par for - Low price often comes with very light construction and not a lot of longevity. At the other end of the scale, you get good quality in the big brand boards, but you're also funding bigger margins & marketing budgets. There are some mid range boards that are great quality and at a price point under the big brands that represent very good value, particularly if you can buy a demo board or 2015/2016 stock.
For the type of board you're looking for, (cruising & small surf it seems) you're spoilt for choice.

I read somewhere that double your weight in volume is a good starting point, for instance your 80kg x 2=160l volume.
However, I'm riding a 130l 8'6" x 30", and this is plenty stable enough for me - I'm similar size to you. Prior to that I was riding a 10' by 32", but i progressed out of that in about 2-3 months.
IMHO I'd be looking for a used Fanatic Allwave, say 9' by 32" if you can get it, and maybe a 2013/14 model. They should run under $1000 used, and its going to be a lot better than a brand new low end board. I put a paddle blade through my cheap board - massive ding, cost me $100 to repair. The surf is unforgiving and you definately want a quality build when you are venturing into the waves.
However i've heard good things about the Evoke, and you cant go wrong when you are beginning. Any board and paddle will do, when you get addicted, you'll be keen to invest in the quality gear.
