Turtle bay Resort looks very nice.

We spent lots of time snorkelling as the kids enjoyed it but we stayed in a private house instead.

Not the best food, and not many other options but everything else is great

Wave out front is not consistent, and when breaking not the best. You'll be jumping in the car to go surf.

Now this house is on one of the nicest north shore beaches. Waves all the time steps from the house, some of the more secluded breaks.

Stayed last year with the wife (no kids), loved it.

The wave on the pool side was very consistent - broke every day we were there and my wife could sit by the pool with a cocktail and watch!
'Disco's' on the East side of the resort was also really good too, although its a bit more of a deeper water, sketchier feeling break out there by yourself!

Certainly depends on the swell direction & strength at the time you are there, but if it wasnt for wanting to tick places like Pipe & Rocky Point off the bucket list I would have been really happy with just surfing those two right at the resort.

Stayed there in Oct 2013 and had a blast. Surf out the front was consistent with a number of take off zones. Was too big on a couple of days. 1st day hired a Lopez sup from board shop located there but plastic and aluminium hire paddle snapped after 5 waves!!As such rode a hired a different longboard each day. So take your own paddle.

Lots of activities tennis golf and we hired pushbikes and rode down to Waimea park. You can snorkel at a few spots along that strip. I found food good and a few choices within resort fine but remember to add gratuity. Resort pool great and you cant beat the sunset poolside drink watching over the point break.

Room was excellent looked over surf.

So a big tick from me and I hope to go back in the next year or 3.

Go onto vrbo and find a house on the waterfront, cheaper and a lot nicer for families.
Thousands of houses up on the nth shore.

I spent a lot of time finding the house at Hau Tree. The points that sold me was the small rock wall out the front, so even on the bigger days the kids could still swim inside and be rather safe. Right in front of the house. Also it was huge with so much privacy. The beaches are different over on the North shore as you can't just get straight to the beach unless you have a house. People will walk down from access spots but its very quiet. The neighbours that we met have become great fiends for us now.

We were also on a small off road from the main highway. You could that way pull in and out with out having to reverse onto the main highway. As i said we spent many hours up at the Resort and sadly i never surfed it ( i regret not surfing more all over now, but at the time had so much fun straight out from the house) . Different holidays id say, we had a car and spent time hiking, driving around and looking at stuff, then just relaxing out the house. I really enjoyed feeling like a local other than maybe like i was on a holiday. The resort you could get away with not having a car, but if your going that far, get one and look around.

thanks all for the info…much appreciated. Either Hawaii or japan is the decision to be made.
