Hi, Everyone
I have proposed a Big Wave SUP Invitational Event.
The idea was scheduled for 2015 but with all of the logistics, Insurance, Risk Management Issues there is no chance of it happening in 2015...However 2016 is just around the corner, and i really want to make it happen in 2016!!!
There are 2 waves that the competition can be held at in Newcastle the first wave which is super spectator friendly only breaks at 5ft+ on the low tide and handles up to a solid 8-10ft (10ft tends to close out the whole bay) on the high tide, being a local pioneering big wave SUP rider in the area and especially the proposed spot i don't have to deal with any locals having an issue with the competition as its a one off comp & I'm a local and to be honest they can get ****ed!!!(there usually paddling for the horizon when I'm turning and paddling for the bombs).
The 2nd location is F##king crazy and you have to have extreme ocean knowledge, skill and balls to SUP...its the real deal.
i have only SUP'd it once on a 3m-4m swell and got one on the head without even getting a wave, leash snapped and lets say, i was lucky to avoid a 3km swim, however we would have safety ski's in the channel opposed to being out there by yourself.
The ideal location would be spot 1. easy to judge, great spectator spot, lifeguard tower right there, easy for ski's to launch, and for video and photography purposes awesome light to document the event (risk management a whole lot easier as would be insurance for the event)
there would be 4 x heats of 6 riders at 1 hour each, thus being 24 riders, no semi's no final just budda bing budda boom style of event
anyways thats about it at the present...there has been enormous support from everyone outside of Newcastle (surprise surprise)

Lets rock & roll!!!
Bloody ordinary that back in the day location number one - both the left and right - held a lot more swell. Such a pity the bay has filled with sand.
No doubt, everyone with a modicum of sanity would be happy to let you have location number two. Spearfished down there and never seen any sand. Great spectator sport from the breakwater. Not a bad deal to give it a go in a safety vest with ski backup. Nothing like the days before my time when they used to takeoff around there and ride into Stockton. The need to deepen the channel for massive coal ships has ruined that option!
What ever happened to Martty McMillan's idea to run a similar three discipline comp. At least you could have got some kudos to do Merrewether?
