I have a set of those on my board and they have proven to be 100% effective.....

I ordered the largest ones . Don't really want to stick things on the boards......but seriously who cares about the boards if you are at risk of an attack

I had some on a board a few years ago but haven't put any on a board since, not sure I want to be reminded every time I look at eyes of the perils I could face.

I have them on a few boards. They've worked for me. Should come off okay but as micksmith says, leave them on if you are selling. You definitely won't be able to save the sticker for another board.

Is there any science to back these up? There has been testing for shark repelling devices and the striped wetsuits. I would think if I were a
3m shark and I looked up and saw a board that was 2m with eyes it would be fair game. Making rhythmic slapping on the water surface. Tasty.

Science evidence not required as these eyes are on thousands of boards and todate no attacks have been recorded.

In fact get 2 additional sets to double your protection by fitting to the front and tail of your board.
Note for Longboard riders get 3 or 4 sets so you can put them on top of your board for protection when rolling upside down going under a wave.

I bought a custom SUP a few years ago and the guy put the eyes on the top front corners as he knew I spend a lot of time upside down. Todate no shark attacks

Good idea for the top of the board. When I go for a surf on my longboard (prone) I do seem to paddle out when the sets come in and do
a lot of rolling over. Am still yet to master the 9' 6" duck dive.

Thanks Nozza. Good read. I might invest in a couple of pairs. The Greenough experience of facing them paid off. I had a big one under me at Back Plummer when I was a youngster. When I looked down and realised what it was it just took off like a rocket. Had another one a couple of years ago at a point break this time on a SUP. Fin coming straight toward me. It went under me and I went in quick. As I said I will give them a go.

I cut them down to just the eyes - got rid of the excess area.
No problems sticking them down dry - wipe the board with metho first.
Soapy water method should work too though.
No problems with them coming unstuck.

That's a good idea .

Given that none of my esteemed work colleagues either paddle, surf, sail, windsurf or swim, I have absolutely no interest in communicating with any of them.
Perhaps I will buy a set of shark eyes, put them on a board, and bring the board in and put in the corner my office, in the hope that the eyes scare them off trying to communicate with me.

I just copy / draw them on all my boards (easy as - no worries:-)

There are far scarier eyes on the internet.
So do a search and make your own choice.
In 5 years all experiences can be put here and who knows we may all become rich.

I have applied with soapy water, no drama.

This is an interesting issue. I'm no marine biologist, but I think it would be pretty difficult to test these things in a foolproof scientific way. I note that the Shark Eyes website does (properly) state that the product has not been scientifically tested and that they are relying only on anecdotal experiences.

Personally, I have always been fatalistic about sharks. More people die from toasters every year than shark attacks.

So we assume the risks whenever we go for a surf/paddle. The prospect (certainty) that there may be sharks out there somewhere has never deterred me from getting in the water. Of course, there are places where the likelihood of a shark encounter are higher than others - river mouths, offshore reefs, seal colonies etc. So, depending upon the spot and/or the conditions, you may think more carefully about a surf at a deep offshore reef than surfing, say, a tiny beachie in shallow water, near the shore.

Great Whites are awesome creatures, especially when you see them close up in their natural environment. I've done the shark dive experience with my son in the South Neptune Islands off Port Lincoln. Amazing having 3 and 4m whites within touching distance! Now, despite my comments above, you won't ever find me on a SUP paddling across the 100' deep channel just off the seal colony where they take you for this dive. That's too much of a risk for any sensible person to take.

Apart from the science, I kinda like the look of these stickers and have thought about getting some - I probably will. Do they work? I have no idea. Will it make me feel any differently about any risk I may assume when I hit the water? Probably not. But who knows whether it could deter interest from a shark - and for a $20 investment, why not? But I do like their ethos of marketing a repellant device that is non-harmful to sharks.

Last year I was surfing at a spot on the mid-north coast of NSW for a few days during the 'mullet run'. Being from Vicco, I hadn't experienced this before. In 3 days surfing I saw at least a dozen sharks - all up close (ie directly under the board or within 2 - 10 feet of me). It was pretty amazing. I felt relaxed about it because the sharks were there because there were millions of mullet in the water and I assumed they were focused on them and not the surfers in the water. This was probably not a 'normal' surfing shark encounter situation, but it would be interesting to see if there was any discernible difference in up-close shark behavior if your board had shark eyes stickers.

I think it is rare to be attacked. But it's the thought of it that freaks most of us out . I have seen a Bull Shark from 15-20m and that was scary enough . Seeing a Great White next to my board ... well I wouldn't probably survive to tell the story . I would definitely turn to jelly

Thought to throw in the 2bobs worth. I surf NNSW waters and have been a serial dawn patroller. I've only ever used shark shield because it's functionality is based around science and it's the only product to offer itself up to independent university based scientific testing;

Used to have some videos on their web page as well, Ocean Gaurdian now. WA govt even subsidises their surfers to purchase them because the companies done the science hard yards in this regard.
If your serious about shark mitigation then look behind the snake oil claims before splashing the hard earned, make these companies accountable for predating on our fears for a dollar. Science can and should be put into the R & D of these products to ensure their efficacy.

We've just had the mullet run and are midst bait fish schooling atm (where the Kingscliff surfer recently got taken) and the whales are starting to migrate pass with their deadly entourage and I'm not fkg around with the snake oil crew for my safety.
I've no affiliation at all, just a surfer and occasional spearo who did a bit of homework and enjoys the piece of mind. Having said that I don't use it all the time either and it's not on my sup.

I think it all depends more on type of water, location & shark on what types of shark deterrant may work.
Discoloured sudsy water. Shark eyes may not work but a shark shield may be a better option.
In clearer waters shark eyes may work. Sharks like the Bull sharks have been known to shy away from face on looks. But will zoom in & attack when facing away. They sense this somehow.
I haven't really done any research on Sharkshield and hoping that it will deter a shark from all angles of attack. Mine was front on whilst just sitting on my shortboard in discoloured sudsy water near a lakes entrance with water running out to sea. The shark I'm assuming was a Bronze whaler that bit my foot thinking it was a fish. I don't think Shark eyes would have deterred it.
I don't think any aerial shark patrol would have seen the shark nor did the jetski patrols that scanned the area after the attack. So don't think your safe by aerial patrols unless the water is clear.
Sharkbanz is another. But I read that a surfer wearing one for the very first time got bitten by a shark when he fell in the water when riding his board.
And I think he got bitten because the shark was attracted to the splash & zoomed in immediately at speed and took a bite before it felt the deterrant.
