Backwards step if you ask me.

Fixed wing craft aren't suited to most filming applications, which is why everyone flies multirotors.

Also the sample videos they shot don't exactly fill me with awe... jerky, bumpy footage. I've shot better with my homebrew hexa. And no gimbal? Come on.

The software they've written seems like an improvement over what else is out there, but only just.

I can't see this catching on unless they really make some improvements.

Yeah have agree that footage was not flash. Very jerky. Yes that's right DJ GoPro are bringing out their own drone , negotiations failed with DJI and they poached the head engineer from 3DR so I guess they are cutting ties with them as well . Making a great camera is one thing but making a great drone first time round is a really big call. Let's see how they go.

As Nebbian has already stated, the ability of the Quadcopter to hover ,is i guess ,an important part of filming with these devices. Can't really see how a fixed wing is a step forward for civilian use.

The one advantage of the fixed wing would be the high speed sweeping shots of a shoreline to give that cinematic look. The quads can get jello and shake at speed.

Maybe you could use it for an air strike if someone drops in on you

Maybe not necessarily for SUP, but for faster sports it could be awesome. I'm thinking things that are powered by other than human means basically... Imagine it following windsurfers or similar, that could be pretty sweet. Either way, it's an interesting addition to the mix IMHO.

Interested to see what the GoPro drone will be like, and whether or not it too explodes the day after the warranty runs out...

Everything you just watched in Windjunkies link can be done on the 3DR drone . Vision is one thing as I said above to make it so simple and easy for the punter on a drone GoPro have put their head on a chopping block. I hope they do it but I won't be be buying the first one.
