Is there a school of thought on types of paddles one uses in the surf vs flat water? Should they be different? I was thinking a bigger blade in the surf to catch those waves quicker.

A lot of people go the other direction as a smaller blade allows for quicker strokes getting onto wave etc, I started with a blade size of 110 sq inch but have gone done to a 90 sq inch and found it heaps better for that last couple strokes onto the wave but its all personal preference, I also now downgraded my size of paddle for flatwater to take the strain off my elbow and shoulder

I use the same for both.. just a couple of inches shorter for surfing..

something with a bit of flex and a smaller blade..my paddle is the same as my height...makes it easier to move the paddle around as you surf. Or whatever suits your style....
